Steel cased ammo has some risk of eventually rusting(which is why many companies coat it). But short of ammo being immersed in water for a long time it's not likely to go bad in a very very very long time. You could use anything from plastic ammo cans to metal ones etc. Or you could do something more decorative if you want.
The question is what are you looking to do?

I'm not real concerned with rust with most of my ammo being in good ammo cans. I just want something to store it in that will be hard to break into or carry away. With my ammo just sitting on the floor in cans, it'll be easy to steal in case of a break in.
Basically, it's more about security.
