You'll do as well as you train yourself to do. I would say that your friend is correct in that you should be able to run 5 or 6 miles fairly easily if you want to do well. If you want to do better be able to run 8 to 10 miles. The running involved is the most overlooked aspect in my opinion. If you can handle your body weight you'll be fine in the obstacles and even if you struggle you'll see plenty of people that struggle as well.
You have breaks at obstacles and of course can walk whenever you need to. Just put in the work and you'll be fine.
