Your life as you know it does not end but rather changes. Sure, long gone are the spur of the moment juvenile activities that dominate one's youth, but even those activities can proceed because the only thing that is needed is planning.
I've had just my son and I solely for the past 5 years. During that time I've almost completed my bachelors degree, dated several women, done tons of fun activities (some with him and some without---and the ones that were with him I cherish the most) and I've had no help. Hell not even child support.
I, for one, hope that this life is over schtick is nothing more than a pathetic attempt at comedy. If, after looking into your child's just once, doesn't want you to discard a life as "you once knew it" then perhaps counseling would be a useful endeavor. I say this not trying to be malicious, but rather to call your attention that you are objectifying your children as the source of your misery and that is something that, no matter how well you guard your words, is quite detectable.
Like I said before, I traded the juvenile spur of the moment actions and what I got instead was undying loyalty and trust. The thrill and the excitement of cultivating a human being who is honest, trustworthy, and mentally strong. I am not perfect by any means, but I can honestly say that my children have given me no sense of misery and I can honestly say I wouldn't have it any other way.
