Unraveling the mysteries, symbolism and hidden meanings in "Lost" has become great sport for many couch potatoes.

This confounding tale of survivors stranded on a strange island could have easily become just a cult favorite, but it's the biggest offbeat hit since "The X-Files."

The ultimate water-cooler series, ABC's "Lost," which airs at 9 p.m. Wednesdays, has a devoted fan base that spends hours online and on telephones with friends, family and co-workers analyzing each episode, looking for clues to what it all means.

Hundreds of Web sites are devoted to pondering every scene, character and plot development. Some theories are so deep you have to laugh.

For example, check out www.

4815162342.com for "The Ultimate Theory." This proposes that the island where the survivors are stranded was part of an experiment by scientists who feared Earth's magnetic field was in danger of reversal.

Apparently, a rip in the "electrosphere" would have cataclysmic effects like those described in "Ghostbusters."

You know: "A disaster of biblical proportion. Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies, rivers and seas boiling, 40 years of darkness, earthquakes, volcanoes, human sacrifice."

In addition, "DOGS AND CATS living together - mass hysteria!"

We're more than halfway through the second season, and the mystery of "Lost" has only gotten thicker and more convoluted.

And it's only going to get more muddled. After looking back over this season's episodes and studying several of the fan Web sites - and listening to co-workers endlessly discuss what's going to happen next - I had a vision of future episodes.

I'm sure it wasn't a flashback because there was nothing about my past involved.

I can't be 100 percent certain, but I think we might see the following:

Socrates Redux: Hurley and Charlie discover a deep canyon filled with mismatched socks. Meanwhile, Locke finds another fragment of a tape from the Dharma project. It discloses that scientists were pursuing a theory that a wormhole connects all the washers and dryers in the world.

Out of Time: The Frenchwoman returns and leads Jack to what appears to be a diary that belonged to Amelia Earhart. On another part of the island, Jack finds what appears to be a satchel belonging to D.B Cooper.

Meanwhile, back down the hatch, Locke discovers 18 minutes of audiotape in an envelope marked "Rosemary Woods."

A Three-Hour Tour: In a flashback, we learn that as a child Hurley was fascinated by reruns of "Gilligan's Island," and his lucky numbers - 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42 - add up to the exact number of times the Skipper said "Little Buddy."

Meanwhile, back down the hatch, Locke is shown reading "The Complete Adventures of Curious George" (a moment guaranteed to send millions of fans to chat rooms).

Goodbye, Oz: Fed up with Charlie, the castaways finally banish him from their spot on the island. Jack realizes he has been on the island too long when Sawyer starts looking good to him.

Meanwhile, down in the hatch, Locke plays a CD of Charlie's band, DriveShaft, backward and discovers it means absolutely nothing.

In the jungle, Charlie finds red shoes, tries them on, clicks his heels and disappears.

"COMMANDER IN CHIEF": In a sudden move, ABC yanked "Commander in Chief" from its Tuesday night schedule, replacing it with reruns of "According to Jim" and "George Lopez."

The political drama starring Geena Davis is scheduled to return April 18.

The sitcom reruns will continue until March 7, when a short-run comedy, "Sons & Daughters," will fill the 9 p.m. slot on Tuesdays.

"Commander in Chief" has not been canceled and will return for seven episodes, ABC officials say
