Marty absolutely needed to go. In the two years prior to his firing, he nearly destroyed Brees' career in a meaningless game in '05 because of his stubborn refusal to play Rivers, threw the dumbest challenge flag in league history in '06, was blatantly insubordinate (same reason he was fired in Washington) and tried to hook all his family members up with jobs regardless of qualification.
I maintain that firing Marty was smart, as we were never winning a title with him - but keeping AJ and hiring Norv pretty much closed the title window right after it opened.
