I do see him as a super diabolical 180 from his former self. Walter White, the high school chemistry teacher, wouldn't poison a little boy just to motivate Jesse to go after Gus. He wouldn't tell Jesse to go murder Gail just to save his own ass. And he wouldn't be just fine with Todd murdering the kid who saw them steal the methylamine from the train.
