Honestly, in some state, a landlord can't take deposit for repair of normal wear and tear. If the carpet was crappy to begin with, I'd try that approach.

If he didn't notate the condition on his move-in checklist the landlord can keep the deposit, and even charge him if the cost of replacement exceeds the amount of the deposit.
