Have you watched the lockerroom speeches from Houston this year? He's saying the same stuff and I have to believe he carries similar weight.
I still think the problems on the defense are largely personnel related; just too many guys that simply aren't capable of doing the job at this point. Too much aging, too much attrition and not enough attention has been paid to that side of the ball while we tried to straighten out the offense over the last several years.
But Peters individually, OTOH, may well be struggling because he no longer has Berry in his ear. Berry could easily have been his rock.
I don't think Berry's emotional presence is to blame for this defensive tailspin (though losing his ability on the field is hurting us a great deal). But if you combine the loss of his ability with what it's done to Peters, it may be the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back.
