You are ****ing high.

John Elway was at his best in his prime years from the ages of 25 to 33.
He carried the mediocre offensive talent for years.

Mike Shannahan surrounded him with far more talent than he'd ever played with before in his career at the ages of 37-38, and installed a system that maximized efficiency for Elway.

And ftr, Elway is one of only 2 or 3 QBs over the age of 33 to win a SB.

So history suggests that if Alex Smith, by some freak miracle of nature, actually plays well enough to warrant the price paid for him, has to do it within the next 4 or so years.

We essentially paid a premium for a 4 year window, at best.
