Eeek. A lot of strong responses here. I'll respond to yours because it's the only one that really stated a point. But I did say I support AOSP builds, and CM7 is the best example of that. They are one of the few independent Android developers that actually support their product, and they do amazing stuff for Android.
I think too often Android defenders use the "it's open" defense as a reason to adopt the software, where in reality, the development isn't very strong outside of the app space and AOSP community. If you want to root to get a program, more power to you. If you want to root because you think you can improve your phone with a new ROM released on XDA, I think you should at least educate yourself.
