They are both good machines. For me, the PS3 was the better decision. That doesn't mean that the 360 isn't a good decision either. Your best bet is to talk with your son about what is the most important to him as well as go over the benefits of both systems. Maybe have him check how many of his friends have a PS3 since you already know he has friends with a 360.
Also, keep in mind, (this is my biggest gripe with the 360) You have to pay up to $50 PER PROFILE per YEAR with the 360 to be online.
