And the same is true of nearly all scientists working in complex areas. My "much" is bigger than the "much" of climate scientist's, obviously. But scientists routinely rely on the previous findings of others to make new progress, without going back to personally verify the previous work of others. For example, I would be willing to wager that the vast majority of climate scientists have never personally measured the absorption spectrum of CO2. But they can use that knowledge (as can I) to predict the effect of CO2 (or another gas for which the absorption spectrum is known) on average planetary temperature.
