Well they come from an era where being gay was unacceptable. It is my guess they fought the urge and thought they could put it in their past. When I was in high school we assumed the guys in drama were queer because of how they acted. We treated them like shit. I was never violent towards them but knew guys that were. The era they lived in argument does make a lot of sense, too scared of the stigma to come out.
