If they are what I think they are, you can buy the vintage kluson tuners and put them back on, but most people who gig take them off because they are fragile as hell. They crumble in your hand if you're too rough with them. So you take them off and replace them with tuners that are slightly smaller (so you don't leave a mark that would be visible once the kluson tuners go back on).

These tuners are expensive though. Several hundreds of dollars to get the single line version that are from that time period. Collectors have bought up thousands of old Gibsons and Epis that were still in decent shape, except for the tuners so there is an entire secondary market just for those.
