Architects unveil new Sprint Center rendering

The architectural team for the planned Sprint Center arena released a new rendering of the $250 million project at a meeting where the final development agreement also was discussed.

Although much work remains on determining whether the design will be affordable, a spokesman for the Downtown Arena Design Team said today this is the direction his group is heading.

“I would characterize this as images that reflect refinements of the initial concept we unveiled in September,” said Bob White. “These have yet to be fully tested for cost.”

Whomever the city picks to be the general contractor for the 18,000- to 20,000-seat arena project will work closely with the architectural team to determine the feasibility of the design. Mortenson Construction of Minneapolis was the choice of a city review panel, but that recommendation is still awaiting consideration by the Kansas City Council.

The latest rendering continues to show an arena that will use glass extensively for its exterior. Architects have said they hope the surface will not only allow transparency between the inside and outside of the facility, but also allow electronic images and other special lighting to be displayed. A water feature also is included outside of the arena that could be frozen for winter skating.

The new renderings were introduced as part of a presentation of the final development agreement between the city and Anschutz Entertainment Group of Los Angeles to the Council Finance Committee. The AEG agreement commits the company to a $50 million investment in the project, and holds it responsible for any operating shortfalls and construction cost overruns.

The Finance Committee endorsed the development agreement unanimously and sent it to the full Council for consideration Thursday. Mayor Kay Barnes anticipated the Council will approve the contract with AEG.

AEG will manage the construction of the project, and will reap most of the profits from the venture. The city will retain ownership of the arena.

The exterior is glass... you will be able to see the skyline from within the arena, which should be very cool. The glass is reactive, so they can change its translucency; making it opaque or clear to whatever the situation calls for. They also can project video on the glass for ads, information, etc. I'm looking forward to seeing it!

Here's a photoshop job I did showing the arena and P&L district.....I can't find the original right now but when I get home I can post it for comparison
