Simplex3's SuSE Linux Converts Thread

Looking for some help moving to Linux? Drop the question here and we'll see what I can do. Some topics I expect we'll cover:

1. Installation
2. What apps do what?
3. My (hardware) isn't working (right)
4. Multi-media issues

Remember, if you need help sooner rather than later:

Kubuntu users:
1. Launch Konversation from the "Internet" menu.
2. Connect to #kubuntu by double clicking on it.
3. Ask away.

Suse users:
1. Install X-Chat
2. Connect to the Freenode network
3. Join the #suse channel
4. Ask away. There are usually about 280 helpful souls in there.

I'll also try to keep this up as a sort of FAQ. Non-question-specific posts will have a large, bold heading (see post #2).

*Note: Don't forget you can try out Linux without installing anything on your PC at all. Download one of the LiveCD versions, burn it to a disc, then reboot the PC with the LiveCD in the drive and your computer will load Linux and your hard disk will not be changed. You can get them at either of these links:
http://www.kubuntu.com/
http://www.novell.com/products/susel...rors_isos.html
http://www.mepis.org/
http://www.knoppix.org/

*Note: If I start asking you to run a bunch of things from a command prompt it isn't because that's the only way to do it, it's because that's the only way I can "control" what is happening on your end.

I might load it this weekend just to experiment with it. too bad I already activated Vista. According to their website, I should be able to activate as many times as I want though.

PCLinuxOS

How do you shut down X to install a new Nvidia driver? None of the online help guides are very clear on this.

Yeah, I tried that earlier and it just took me back to the standard login screen. I couldn't install the driver from there.

In a very general sense:

You install the files and the CtlAltBksp just restarts the X server with whatever your new config is.

Try:

Quote:
Installing And configuring nVidia on PCLINUXos 2007 ...

1- Go to Synaptic Package Manager in System - Administration Menu.
2- Press on Search Icon on Synaptic Menu.
3- Fill in the Word nvidia and press ok. ( Look in Description and Name )
4- Choose (NVIDIA kernel module for GeForceFX and newer NVIDIA GPUs)
5- accept the requirements.
6- press on Apply.
7- Logoff and relogin

Thats all

Enjoy ..

Can't use package manager as the only Nvidia drivers it has are out of date for my card. I need to install the one directly from the Nvidia website. Manual install.

I am limited to 1024x768 on the current driver and that just won't cut it for me.

Also, it won't let me install the driver until X has stopped so Ctrl Alt Backspace isn't working the way you are stating.

What card do you have? Is it brand new?

I've heard (I'd have to look it up) that the 8800 series cards don't play well with the Nvidia made drivers.

BOOTING in RUNLEVEL 3 ( Trick with Lilo )

Sometimes when troubleshooting you will want to boot in run-level 3 ( This is the non-graphical mode ) because X is using the wrong driver or the system fails to boot the usual way, hanging on some module it fails to load.

Here is a simple trick for the people using Lilo as their boot-loader:
Imagine your Lilo menu usually shows you:

PCLos
Mandrake
Fedora
Debian
Slackware

And it is PCLos you want to boot in run-level 3 . . . .

When you get the lilo-screen where you can choose what distro to boot press the Esc-key and you will get a prompt . . . at that prompt type:

CODE
PCLos 3

( Basically it is the name of the menu entry you want to boot and a 3 ) . . . . It will then boot in level 3 . . . then you can login as "root" ( not "su" ) and do "XFdrake" to set the correct driver for your graphics card, or any other troubleshooting operation you need to perform.
When you are ready you can either type "reboot" or log out as root with Ctrl+D, then log in as user and type "startx", . . . and it will magically continue booting from level 3 to level 5.

NOTE: Sure you can type "PCLos 1" too so it boots in "single user mode" giving you a root-prompt, so in case you forgot the root-password you can just type "passwd" and change it to one you can remember next time you need it.

Nvidia's Linux driver could be better, no argument here. At least they aren't ATI's. Steaming pile of turd.
