Is gangsta rap leading to increased crime in the US?

This is the title of a project I've been assigned for my Criminology class.

Part of the project allows me to gather opinion from people I know.

What better place to do this than on the Planet?

What say you? Does rap contribute to the rising number of violent crime in the US? Any bearing at all?

Does rap breed deviance?

Gangsta Rap? Hahhaa these days? Like who? The rap nowadays is pop rap. They just talk about how rich they are, and how they own the club and all the ho'z like them. The likes of DMX and Tupac talking about killing people and drugs are gone pretty much. Kinda sad, I used to like the gangsta rap. It was interesting hearing about their trials and tribulations IMO, I don't think it has much impact with crime. You'll always hear about those guys on the news that kill a cop and say oh well Tupac made me do it 'cuz I listen to their music. That is the most pathetic copout for attention ever, and don't believe it for a second.

Agreed, its not the music, but the popularity of the music has lead to an increase in popularity of the thug lifestyle and mentality. Increase in naricissm and bad behavior, manners and attitude in general. Its all made this stuff mainstream.

The perception of rap/ hip hop with thugs, hoods and gangstas give the overall rap community a bad name. The media and culture of the rap/ hip hop is the bad name..........

In turn, It only takes a few bad apples to ruin the basket.

But FTR, I hate rap and hip hop and all the gangsta crap around......... but that's just me.

Yes.

But not in a direct way. It's more of an indirect cheapening of women, glorifying of violence, and tolerance of hate. It has succeeded in desensitizing people who were already eager to be so.
