Why Do You Like Football?

As a fan, I mean. These are dark days and, not only are we now one of the worst teams in the league, the franchise ownership is tacitly endorsing claims that we are stupid, too. Anyway, this got me wondering about why people enjoy football so much, so I thought I'd start a new, fabulous thread entitled, "Why Do You Like Football?".

I suppose some people enjoy it because of the "controlled violence" aspect of the game or to admire the skills displayed by the players on the field. Others because of the strategies involved or, perhaps, the suspense associated with a close contest. Some people are gamblers and stay interested for that reason and still others like the tribal aspect of pitting "our guys" against "their guys" in a brutal fight to acquire enemy real estate one yard at a time.

To me, it's the perfect American Game. Before every snap, the offense discusses their "Plan" in the huddle. Then, they go out and execute their "Plan". Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Either way, you go back and work up a new "Plan". On the other side, the defense does everything they can to screw up the offense's "Plans". It's just like capitalism.

If you're so inclined, please feel free to share the reasons why you like the game. Say, maybe, 100 times.

Love football

Like a chess game. Plays and moves and see if you can adjust to stop the opponent from completing their plans of action. Like the violence of it. Like to see the chance that everyone has to be the hero. Hell I enjoyed watching Dustin punt almost as much as a well ran pass route or a running play where everyone makes and performs their assignment. Poetry in action. Also like to see those who think they are God's gift perform poorly. Loved seeing T.O. bawling yesterday. The only sport I like better is boxing where you never lose the opportunity to win. You can get the s**t knocked out of you for 11 rounds 2 minutes and 50 seconds and still win with one well placed shot to the chin or liver.

Great thread idea Mr. Fax.

It is the perfect game for the season, whether you are bundled up trying to stay warm at the game, or setting in front of your own TV with a fire blazing.

It moves along at a consistent pace, unlike baseball you can almost guarantee the length of the game.

You can plan meals and drunkeness with some accuracy.

Games being held once a week, allows you time to build up to and reflect on the last one.

That being said, to quote Braincase: It's the prefect combination of speed, strength, execution, intellect and violence.

Except for men in tight pants I agree with this thread as a whole and I'd like to add that playing competitive fantasy football has taken my love of the game to an absolute obsession.

I can't begin to express the feelings I have on Sundays as I turn on my 7 tv's and choose which games are going to be where and then sitting back for an afternoon with the guys, trash talking, drinking and just having a great time.

It's the ultimate team sport. It takes 11 men working together to succeed and only takes 1 to **** it up.

I fell in love with football as a participant on the playground. It wasn't until I became an adult that I found enjoyment as a voyeur.

I love the game for all the requisite skills. Speed, agility, strength, throwing, catching, execution, and competition.

It's the greatest sport on earth and I pray corporate greed doesn't turn it into MLB.

His purest joy, he once said, was to hit someone so hard he could see the "snot bubble out of his nose." His was a brutal business, and he loved it. And many loved him for it. "I'm a wild man in a wild game," he once said with satisfaction. And the cheers in the stadium echoed and echoed in his ears.

did you ever catch LT's "Tough-Man" ring appearance? classic LT!

the drama: it's like a four act play, with each act taking on it's own unique flavor, with the conclusion (07 Patriots excepted) generally in suspense until the fourth act. plot twists, marquee & supporting actors, unexpected performances, last hurrahs, and heroes in the making...the gamut of human emotions & performance.

I hear that, Mr. Phobia. I read that, too.

Football is a fascinating sport, really. I suppose its origins are in rugby. But rugby is a free-for-all, maniacal, confusing mess at times. On the other hand, American football is highly structured.

As I mentioned in the starter, I don't think it would be nearly as popular were it not for the fact that you completely stop the game, one team gets to call a "play", then they get to run their "play", see how it works, then they completely stop the game again.

It gives everybody time to think about what just happened, evaluate the results, and prepare for the next effort. It's very much like life. Or, rather, the way life should be.

Football in general or the Chiefs? I started watching football when I was 7, I think. Not sure why I like it.
I like the Chiefs because I am obviously a masochist...
