Uh oh. Chiefs denied Lions permission to speak to Gunther...

Source: Lions were refused permission to talk to Gunther Cunningham

MOBILE, Ala. -- According to a league source, the Lions were initially refused permission to talk to Kansas City defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham about taking the same position with Detroit.

The Chiefs might be in a transition period with new general manager Scott Pioli deciding the fate of head coach Herm Edwards. According to the source, the Lions are waiting to see if the Chiefs will eventually grant Cunningham permission to talk to the Lions.

Lions head coach Jim Schwartz, who said he was going to take his time in putting together a staff, coached for three years with Cunningham when they were both with the Tennessee Titans. Schwartz has been busy at the Senior Bowl interviewing candidates for coordinator and assistant coaching jobs but, so far, no job has been filled.

Schwartz is expected to return to Detroit Wednesday evening and that's when he's expected to also interview many members of the Lions' current staff. Those Detroit coaches, who are all at the Senior Bowl, have been granted permission to seek jobs with other teams, but Schwartz reserves the right to refuse any possible deal and keep that coach with the Lions.

"Everything's just kind of up in the air,'' said one of Detroit's assistants.

"I'm optimistic and I'd like to stay in Detroit. We'll see what happens,'' said another assistant.

The gist of this article "Initially" is that we have refused permission at least once for Cunningham to speak w det about their vacant D.C. Position.

That in and of itself looks bad for those who wish herm fired asap.

Pats fans were pissed when Belichick was hired. He was considered a failure, a retread and overly conservative.

Now, I do not make the comparison to suggest that Herm will ever be the caliber of coach that Belichick is.

I merely point out that Pioli comes from a franchise that doesn't care what the fans think. Remember the outcry from the cutting of Lawyer Milloy?

If Pioli wants to bring Herm back for whatever reason, he won't worry about the fans initial reaction. He knows that winning cures all.

Ok, for the life of me I couldn't figure it out.

But now I get it, the article was pretty much BS.

What would the FO have done, fired Cunningham, for having interviewed elsewhere? The Chiefs FO let go of the tether last week for Preifer and Gibbs, and did so with Gun on or before Monday.

Good luck, Gun. Your work with the self-appointed defensive guru, that looked over your shoulder at every turn, is done. Your time here had come and gone. Hope you find this message on the internet. (Wink, wink. Nudge, nudge.)

Yeah I didn't think it made much sense for us to refuse permission. Maybe they asked to interview him before we were eliminated from the playoffs in week 6, or whatever.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) - New Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz made his first major staff hire Wednesday, bringing in veteran assistant Gunther Cunningham as defensive coordinator.

The two previously worked together as assistants on Jeff Fisher's staff in Tennessee. Schwartz was defensive coordinator under Fisher this past season, when the Titans posted an NFL-best 13-3 record with a defense that ranked second in points allowed.

Cunningham, a 40-year coaching veteran on the college and pro levels, was Kansas City's head coach from 1999-2000 and the Chiefs' defensive coordinator in 1995-98 and from 2004 through this past season.

He'll set about trying to fix one of the league's worst defenses, one of the big reasons Detroit didn't win a game last season.

Terms of his contract were not disclosed.
