Royals to dump catcher Brayan Pena

The Royals must make a roster move before today's game to clear space for veteran right-hander Sidney Ponson, their announced starting pitcher. Ponson opened the season assigned to Class AAA Omaha on a minor-league contract. Club officials indicated the likely move, barring an injury, will be to designate catcher Brayan Pena for assignment. The Royals are unlikely to carry a third catcher in addition to Miguel Olivo and John Buck. Pena, 27, did not play in the three-game series against the White Sox. He is out of options and, barring a trade, would need to be sent through waivers. Even if he clears waivers, Pena has the option of becoming a free agent rather than accept an assignment to Omaha, where his salary would dip from $405,000 to $138,700. -- KC Star

What's stopping us from dumping Buck? He's completely mediocre - I see no reason why we don't keep Pena over him.

Given the scarcity of even average ML catchers, I'd have to think that Buck might have some, albeit limited, trade value.

The fact that MLB doesn't allow draft picks to be traded sucks ass.

Remember that Buck has also been one of Seitzer's pet projects this off-season, so that might be playing a role here, too. Seitz might think he's going to get him turned around.

Maybe, but I think Buck has had enough chances. After Pena put up a 376 OBP last year in Omaha with more walks than strikeouts, I'd like to see what he can do at the big league level.

No argument. I think it's stupid to dump a guy who plays a premium position and might have upside. High-quality catchers are just too damn tough to find.

It's an especially stupid move when Tony Pena is still on the roster...

We will carry three catchers for at least another 15 days. Guillen is on the disabled list. It would be nice to get some pinch hits with B. Pena.
