Either way, don't understand anyone here who makes the argument that the guy is safer snooping around the backyard without the owner knowing about it.

I know how I'd react if I'm sitting in my house and I saw a mysterious person in my yard rooting through my shit.
never said "snooping" if this helps clear it up, I'm saying seeing the potato gun doesn't mean there wasn't shots fired and the cop can look in the backyard, enter that backyard, perhaps he starts heading to the door to get the occupants to answer and he looks to see if something is out of place, casing on the ground, blood trail into the house, etc. (oh yeah, ninja's in the bushes can't for them). He should also be listening for noises or sounds of a struggle around the corner of the house or inside the house.

This story should read, Buford T. Justice meets Jeff Spicoli. It sounds like both of these clowns were short in the IQ department.

I have not read the entire thread but I want to know where the backup was at. I assume a call out for a possible discharging of a weapon would not have just a single officer respond. So you would then have this guy in the back seeing the "weapon" but noone around, radios that to his partner who is approaching the front door. No need to enter the backyard but the back is covered while dealing with the people in the house in a decent, perhaps respectful manner.

Before I even clicked the link I knew there would be a stupid cop and a pit bull.

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).
