Favre not returning to Vikings?
By Mark J. Miller

Everybody seems to figure Brett Favre(notes) will be back next season with the Minnesota Vikings, but now some doubt is being thrown over that scenario, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

The paper reports that NFL Network analyst Steve Mariucci, who also was the quarterbacks coach for the Green Bay Packers when Favre started his career there, recently said that he had talked to Favre and the quarterback is still on the fence on whether he'll come back or not.

And this isn't a case of Favre figuring out if he wants all the bother of playing pro ball or not. The ankle he hurt during the NFC title game loss against the New Orleans Saints is still bugging him.

"He doesn't know yet," Mariucci apparently said. "He's trying to heal up. ... His body is recovered except for that ankle. That's not quite ready yet. It's an ankle that he had surgery on twice before and it's still pretty puffy."

Mariucci said Favre is wondering if his 40-year-old body is telling him something.

The Vikings have the second pick in the second round today that was obtained in a trade with the Detroit Lions. Should be interesting to see if the team goes after a quarterback to add to Tarvaris Jackson(notes) and Sage Rosenfels(notes).

Wow. Favre is considering retirement? He's unsure of whether or not to return? He's pondering giving it up and going home to begin the rest of his life? I wonder how this drama is going to end.

They would not trade down if they're that desperate.

But on the espn.com chat last night, they mentioned several times that the Vikes seemed more interested in scouting McCoy than Clausen.

Except that now there are teams all over the draft that may trade up for Clausen.

Maybe the will, maybe they won't, but if you're about to lose your QB and you think this kid is the answer, is that a risk you're willing to take?

No, it isn't.

It's either that or continue the Tebow Suckfest. Either way, the NFL will be lock jawed on one of their cocks.

I think so to. They are in urgent win now mode. They need someone who can step onto the field right away.

Even the thickest, slowest brand of ketchup knows that it's way too early for Farve to make that decision. Anything coming out right now is disinformation.

There was another piece today that stated he could play for another two years...

Vikings think Favre could play two more years

Posted by Mike Florio on April 23, 2010 12:45 PM ET
As we work through the well-guarded "list of crap to write about," here's a topic that came up during a very enjoyable visit with our good friend Boomer Esiason of WFAN on Friday morning. (Or other good friend Craig Carton was under the weather. On one hand, we wish him a quick recovery from an apparent case of laryngitis. On the other hand, Craig Carton with laryngitis actually may not be a bad thing.)

The Vikings hold the second pick in the second round. According to Steve Mariucci of NFL Network, Brett Favre remains undecided about returning for 2010. Mariucci also reports that the ankle Favre injured during the NFC title game is still bothering him. The uncertainty regarding Favre's status -- and the assumption that he'll play only one more year at most -- is causing many to assume that the Vikings will pick Jimmy Clausen or Colt McCoy with the 34th overall pick.

But here's something to keep in mind. We're told that, despite Favre's silence, the Vikings think he'll play two more years. If that's the case, there's no reason to begin grooming his replacement now.

The Vikings reportedly had hoped to land cornerback Patrick Robinson after sliding back four spots, a maneuver that the Saints disrupted by, you know, picking him. And in the paper version of the New York Times that was hanging on the door of the hotel room across the hall from mine (Mrs. PFT told me to take it, since I'm already going to hell anyway), Greg Bishop writes that the Vikings had called cornerback Kyle Wilson, whom the Jets picked one spot ahead of Minnesota's slot.

So don't assume that the Vikings are looking for a quarterback. Also, don't be surprised if they deflect any further opportunities to trade down, if it's true that they already have been burned once by gambling that the guy they wanted would still be on the board.
