Chiefs buzz | Coaches practice icing techniques
Chiefs buzz | Coaches practice icing techniques
Chiefs coach Todd Haley called a timeout to put extra pressure on Buffalo kicker Rian Lindell, and that saved Kansas City from an overtime loss. Lindell’s first kick, which was nullified by the timeout, was good from 53 yards; his second try hit the right upright. Later, when Chiefs kicker Ryan Succop lined up for the game-winning 35-yard field goal, Buffalo coach Chan Gailey ran down the sideline and acted as if he were going to call a timeout. He didn’t, and Succop made the kick. “You are playing a mind game,” Gailey said. “That is what it’s all about.” Haley said his technique isn’t as refined as other coaches’. “I’ll openly and honestly say I don’t know what I’m doing when it comes to icing the kicker,” Haley said. “I saw Chan going down the sideline on that last one; he was faking us out. I’m like, the kicker can’t see. Maybe there’s something to it. I’ll be right out front and say I’m a work in progress in a lot of areas, and icing the kicker is one of them.” Asamoah does well in first start Rookie Jon Asamoah made his first pro start in place of right guard Ryan Lilja, who has a hand injury. “He came in and did a great job,” running back Thomas Jones said of Asamoah, a third-round draft pick from Illinois. “He’s one of those guys that you can see his potential every day in practice … he has great athletic ability, he’s smart, and for that to be his first game starting, he had a great game. I was real proud of him.” •Also making their first career starts were defensive end Wallace Gilberry and cornerback Javier Arenas. Chambers returns Chiefs wide receiver Chris Chambers was back in uniform after being inactive the last two weeks. He didn’t start; instead, running back Jamaal Charles started at receiver, opposite Dwayne Bowe. Chambers dislocated a finger on his left hand in Kansas City’s loss at Indianapolis, and he was a healthy scratch against Houston and Jacksonville. Chambers played but had no catches. He was targeted once. •Running back/wide receiver Dexter McCluster (ankle) missed his first game of the season. Newly signed linebacker Mark Simoneau also was among the Chiefs’ eight inactive players. Moeaki’s moment comes in OT The Bills had allowed tight ends to catch 32 passes in six games this season, including seven touchdowns in the last three games. But Chiefs rookie tight end Tony Moeaki — the club’s leading receiver — was pretty quiet until overtime. Then Moeaki, who was spent most of his time blocking and who had no catches in regulation, hauled in three passes for 45 yards in overtime, including two that helped set up the game-winning field goal. “The thing that I’ve said about Tony that continues to impress me is his maturity level,” said quarterback Matt Cassel. “As a quarterback, when you can tell a guy just one time, and he gets it, that’s reassuring and encouraging because you can trust that he is going to be in the right spot and doing the right things, and that’s really what you look for, especially in your tight end.” Military salute The Chiefs honored veterans and active-duty members of the military during Sunday’s game. Col. Gary Johnston, the Regimental Commander of the 24th Marine Regiment based in Kansas City, threw a ceremonial first pass to one of his children. At halftime, a swearing-in ceremony for the United States Marines was conducted by Master Sergeant Zachariah, followed by a video tribute to fallen soldiers. This and that •The Chiefs are 4-0 at home for the first time since 2003. It’s the seventh time in the stadium’s history that the team has started so well at home. The four-game home win streak is the longest since 2006. •Kansas City has rushed for at least 200 yards for three consecutive games for the first time since 1978. The Chiefs have 738 rushing yards in their last three games. •Quarterback Matt Cassel has thrown 119 consecutive passes without an interception. •Safety Kendrick Lewis forced his first career fumble, and cornerback Brandon Flowers forced the fourth fumble of his career. •The Bills, 0-7, have now lost consecutive games in overtime, and of their seven losses, four have been by eight points or fewer. |

It is interesting that someone would talk about icing techniques, because I think there is some art to it. It is kind of like when you yell "Noonan!" at a guy getting ready to putt...
When Haley called the time out, he did it at the time then Lindell was able to kick the ball and have made the field goal. He was then all excited about the kick and having made it. When you realize that it didn't count, there is a let down and you start asking yourself if you can be clutch again and nail the 50+ plus yarder in the blowing wind. Chan on the other hand, has the worst freezing technique ever...He runs down the sideline doing the "T" sign before Succup is even close to being ready. You run the risk on Haley's technique of the kicker missing it and being reinvigorated with the 2nd chance... |
