Anyone Ever Learn A New Language?

I was considering learning Spanish.

Anyone ever learned a new language? is so, what did you use to learn it? what was your experience? how long did it take to do so?

i took a couple years in high school, but that was a long time ago and i've forgotten much of what i skipped then.

If you expect uneductaed migrant workers to come here and make shit wages and do manual labor in fields with other spanish speakers AND go to school at night and learn english...when they are only here temporarily.....

Well maybe your expectations are unrealistic? These people cant even read and write in their own language and do physical manual labor for near minimum wage...

They have the intention of returning to Mexico.....

Bottom line is i want to learn it. i dont have to.

I could easily get by using translators, hand signals, very common english words, or do the transactions without speaking, but i'd like to be able to communicate better.

Like it or not, there is a huge influx of spanish speaking people flooding into this country. I just as well be able to communicate with them. I believe i'll be helping more than myself if i do.

This thread was intended to discuss how to learn it as opposed to why though.

Thats not good enough, they have to speak and read and write college level English even though they are illiterate in their own language.

i usually just leave and find an english speaking game. i figure, if i'm gonna play their game, I better learn to speak their language or I can GTFO!





i actually have a bigger problem with the pricks that turn their mic on, never speak on it, and have shitty ass music playing in the background. or a baby... there's always a crying neglected baby.

I am learning more of a language I've been hearing since I was a baby, Danish. I'm going over there in May for 3 weeks and 3 days. Why 3 weeks and 3 days? Last time, I was there for 3 weeks and 2 days and I wished I had another day, so this year I will. Just a couple of weeks ago, I learned a new Danish word: bindingsvaerk. It means half-timbered, as in the medieval style of building.

I'm not fluent by any means, but I can understand more than I can say. I know important words and phrases in which to use them such as yes, no, thank you, breakfast, lunch, dinner, beer, and breasts.

Some Danish words are easy since they are where the English words came from or they are almost the same, such as maelk (milk), peber (pepper), fisk (fish), øl (ale), turist (tourist) and many more. It's also fun to learn words that look like English but are not. For example, you can go on a turist fart and not have to say you're sorry; fart means speed or journey. You can ask a waitress for some good hummer and not get slapped; hummer is lobster. You can step on a klit and not ruin a date; a klit is a hill. There are also many more, but those are my favorites. One more thing, if you go to Denmark and ask for a grape soda, don't think there is something wrong when you see that it is not purple. Grape is how they say grapefruit. I've never seen actual grape soda over there, or cherry for that matter. I suggest orange or lemon.

I learned a very useful phrase last year, taught to me by my second-cousin-in-law (yes, my family is that big that I have to keep track of second and third cousins.) In Danish, it rhymes, but in English is basically goes: We don't care what is on the label as long as our caps spin. If you say that to the locals in a pub, they'll laugh and raise a toast with you and then the conversations start. It's a great toast and ice breaker.
