Top vertical jump records at the NFL Combine

Top vertical jump records at the NFL Combine

During the NFL Combine, players will perform several tests, one of which is the vertical jump. The players will stand still then jump as high as they can, touching the markers that will determine how high they jumped. This test is an important one, as it will show how high a receiver or cornerback can jump to get a ball, and also for defensive lineman, how high they can jump to bat down a pass. Here are the top five highest vertical jumps since 2000.

Gerald Sensabaugh(notes) - Sensabaugh reached 46" back in 2005. The North Carolina Safety was drafted in the fifth round of the 2005 draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars, and now plays for the Dallas Cowboys. 2010 has so far been Sensabaugh's best season, as he picked off five passes and recorded two sacks for Dallas.

Derek Wake - This one is a bit more surprising when you consider Wake is a linebacker. Wake, who played his college ball at Penn State, jumped 45 ˝" back in 2005. He did not get drafted that year as he signed with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent before heading to the Canadian Football League. Wake then signed with the Miami Dolphins in 2009 and finally played in the NFL. During the 2010 season, Wake made the Pro Bowl thanks in part to his 14 sacks for the Dolphins.

Chris McKenzie - The Arizona State cornerback reached 45" back in 2005 (must have been something in the air that year…) which unfortunately did not help him get drafted. He did however sign with the Houston Texans and played in three games during the 2005 season registering a sack and four tackles.

Chris Chambers(notes) - The wide receiver from Wisconsin also hit the 45" mark back in 2001. The Miami Dolphins drafted him in the second round of the 2001 draft, and he has played well throughout his career. A Pro Bowler back in 2005, Chambers caught 82 passes for 1,118 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Donald Washington
(notes) - Washington also put up 45" back in 2009 during the combine. That year he was drafted in the fourth round by the Kansas City Chiefs. He has played sparingly during his time with the Chiefs, although he did see more time during the 2010 season.

Well, if they change the rules so that OT in the playoffs is decided by a dunk contest, we've got this one.

The indication here seems to be that vertical jump prowess is directly correlated with shitty football skill.

Sounds to me like they didn't set up the measuring stick correctly in 2005. They should calibrate it each year by having Rich Eisen do a jump.

I did not know Derek was Cameron Wake's first name. I was like "WTF? Why are they calling him Derek?" Until I looked it up.

Unless you are trying to attempt a FG attempt block that could determine the game, especially with kickers having to kick from say, 35 yards or farther where they have to line-drive it instead of golfing it up in the air.

What's funny is that Randy Moss' vertical was only 39 inches.

They ought to do a running vertical test at the combine.

Only 39?

I hope my sarcasm meter is broken.

There was a Brazilian player in Olympic volleyball a few years ago that was 6'5 and had a 50+" vertical.

That is insane.
