Panthers' LT Jordan Gross will retire (B.Albert is gonna get PAID)
Another NFL hole at LT. Add one more team that'll be looking at B.Albert...
The Panthers have been clearing salary cap space this week, but they won’t need any of it for left tackle Jordan Gross. Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer reports that Gross has decided to retire rather than return for a 12th NFL season. An official announcement is expected to come on Wednesday. Gross was set to become a free agent next month, but said at the end of last season that he would either play for the Panthers or no one. Gross, the eighth pick of the 2003 draft, was a three-time Pro Bowl selection and made the AP All-Pro team after the 2008 season. His retirement leaves a big hole for the Panthers to fill on the offensive line as Gross was still playing at a high level in 2013 without much reason to expect a slip in his game in 2014. Some of the cap space created by restructuring the deals of Thomas Davis, Jonathan Stewart and Ryan Kalil could be earmarked for finding a replacement, although the Panthers have 20 other pending free agents and some other work to do on the offensive line this offseason. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...s-will-retire/ |

This FA class has a lot of average vets and only a few stars who will probably get tagged/re-signed anyways. (Graham, Byrd, Bethea, Grimes, Monroe, Veldheer, Shields, etc) There are also the cap casualties that you can wait on after the draft as teams decide that they no longer need a really expensive vet and cut him loose. Those guys can be signed as well. |

I'm not 100% sure what compensation pick we'd receive, but I thought it would be bottom on the 3rd round. Anything less than that would be a wasted effort.

Branden has worked hard in his career and toiled on some bad teams. I will be glad for him getting a big payday, regardless of what we want to debate about where he is among the league's left tackles. It's a seller's market for him this year. He deserves a big contract. It just doesn't make sense for us to be the ones who give it to him.
Aside from the obvious, it would just completely reek of play-it-safe, ultra conservative, bet-hedging Chiefs of old. We aren't going to come out ahead if we go into next year with the same 3 tackles, but paying a lot more for them. We might come out way ahead though, if we let the aging one go and the one who was a consensus top half of the first round pick works out for us. One move seems like what the Chiefs would historically do, and one seems like what better teams would do. |
