Family rescued from Minivan driven into the ocean

A pregnant mother drove herself and three of her children into the ocean in Daytona Beach, Florida. Thankfully, rescuers were able to the pull the family out of the vehicle that threatened to pull them all into the deep.

Canadian photographer Simon Besner caught the harrowing incident on video, while rescuers fought with the 2-ton vehicle in the water, pulling 3 children and their mother out of the van.

It’s unknown why the driver would head straight for the ocean. One of the first people to reach the vehicle was Tim Tesseneer, who heard the screams of the children inside. He stated:

“The two in the back seat was crying, with their arms out saying ‘Our mommy’s trying to kill us, please help. The kids are like, ‘No there’s a baby. There’s a baby,’. She (the mother) wouldn’t say a word. She didn’t tell us nothing about a baby.”‘

The three kids, aged 10, 9, and 3, were transported taken to a local hospital as a precaution, though they did not appear to have been physically harmed by the event.

A woman accused of driving a minivan into the Atlantic Ocean with her three children in Florida was arrested Friday on three counts of attempted first-degree murder, Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson said Friday afternoon.

Investigators say they think Ebony Wilkerson was trying to kill her children -- ages 3, 9 and 10 -- when she drove into the surf in Daytona Beach on Tuesday, Johnson said.

Bystanders and beach rangers went into the water and rescued the children, witnesses and police said.

Wilkerson also is being held on three counts of aggravated child abuse, Johnson said
