Kansas City Star (May 3rd Mock)

23 Kansas City Chiefs

TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Washington

Could form a devastating duo over the middle with Travis Kelce.

Honestly if this team draft's anything other than a WR or a S with that first pick I'm going to be left scratching my head. Sure you could take an OL CB LB TE etc etc but the priority and the position you need most at this point is a WR or S.

So that's two for two for shitty articles from the KC Star, trade Berry and draft a TE with the first pick... good ones guys. If you're going for original ideas that's about as original as it gets I suppose.

Jenkins wouldn't be the worst pick we could make.

I think a tight end, be it ASJ, Amaro or Ebron makes a more immediate impact on the team than a WR.

I could also be incredibly wrong, but I think a viable pass catching TE like ASJ can draw off coverage deeper down the field from Bowe or Avery if Smith hypnotizes himself into thinking he's throwing to Vernon Davis.

Bonus points if Kelce turns out to be the guy people think he can be. KC can run a legit double tight formation that can allow for moar JC action as well as passing flexibility.

You take the best player at the spot where you pick.

Gabe Jackson will be the best player available (and, fortunately, at one of the biggest positions of need) when the Chiefs select at #23.

With Fasano, McGrath and Kelce, the tight end position is one of the Chiefs real positions of strength.

Drafting a tight end would be redundant and a waste of a pick.

You jest.

McGrath is below replacement level. Fasano is average at best. Kelce's unproven but supposedly has upside that elevates him well above the other two guys on ahead of him on the chart.

Tight end is just as weak as wide receiver on this team, if not more so.

He has tony G ability. supposedly ran in the 4.5s in a private workout. Wish he was more productive in college...he should have dominated.

no way.

Fasano is not a #1 TE, and is average at best.
McGrath did well as a rookie, but is no better than a #2 TE.

Kelce has all world athletic ability, but is unproven and coming back from a serious injury. If the chiefs pursue a TE early, than it tells you all you need to know about how they feel about this group.

In anycase, Alex smith likes the short passing game. I think Dorsey would love to run 12 personel (2 TE, 2 WR) which would allow him to run and pass out of instead of 3 WR sets.

Let your WR take the top off the defense, let your TE work the middle/pass protect/run block, and let JC exploit the matchups.

I just rewatched MS state vs LSU 2013, and Gabe jackson is a mauler.

He is a great run blocker, good on screens...even getting to the second level (suprisingly).

He plays to the whistle and try to pancake people. He did better than I expected as a pass blocker specially when moving guys to the outside and mirroring with a kick-slide. He got beat a couple times with inside moves. Most of the time he got his hands on the defender and they didnt stand a chance.

I still question his ability to thrive in a zone blocking scheme (though he has displayed ability to work a zone), and thrive in an offense that prioritizes the pass. That being said, I think he would be an upgrade for the chiefs and that he can be a very good NFL guard, but would not be the BPA at #23 overall.
