NFL Wants Potential Super Bowl Halftime Acts To Pay For Right To Play

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, the NFL is being a real big jerk to the musical artists that have been selected as finalists to land this year's Super Bowl halftime gig. The league, seemingly unable to understand how concerts work, is asking the artists to pay money in order to play the show.

From the WSJ:

The NFL has narrowed down the list of potential performers for the 2015 Super Bowl to three candidates: Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Coldplay, these people said. While notifying the artists' camps of their candidacy, league representatives also asked at least some of the acts if they would be willing to contribute a portion of their post-Super Bowl tour income to the league, or if they would make some other type of financial contribution, in exchange for the halftime gig.
There's a lot going on here, but I think the fact that it looks like only "some" of the acts were asked to fork over cash is worth noting. There is a 99 percent chance that the NFL was too chickenshit to ask Rihanna for a cut.

[WSJ]
I'd like to think that one of these days, the NFL is going to get put in their place. Hopefully, Mark Cuban is right.

EDIT: Also, no Weird Al

The halftime acts already play for free. I guess this is the logical next step.

Also, there's no way in hell Coldplay is going to be chosen.

Playing for free is cool. You get to get you or your band in front of a BILLION people and free publicity for weeks. They probably make millions on I-Tunes downloads of their music.

The NFL is making enough money on the Super Bowl. There halftime shows suck for the most part already. This can't help, if true.

I'd pay $100 a season to not have announcers in my audio. Instead subbed with players and coaches. The ability to follow a coach or player etc like NASCAR

Do you ever go back and watch the old games before constant announcing? It's ****ing amazing.

I'd give anything just to have the ambient sounds of the game.

It seems slightly greedy. Don't the halftime shows usually already have a sponsor--Pepsi presents Beyonce!

I'm not sure I really even believe this. The article mentions three "finalists." I don't recall ever hearing about "finalists." Usually, they just announce who it is.

Seems like the big hitters--those acts that would actually attract an audience--would tell them to **** off.
And anyone willing to pay to play wouldn't be 'big' enough, so the NFL wouldn't want them anyway.

You knew they had no limits when they actually locked the players out because the owners said they needed a bigger cut. They are going to bleed every dollar they can out of the product. People are crazy about football and they have a license to print money.
