I did that once in Atlanta, got stopped at least once/day on a ~10 minute walk to the office, so I asked a guy for a buck... kind of a blank stare, then just turned and walked away.

My favorite though was a guy in Seattle said something to me, but I had my headphones on and asked him to repeat (figured he was asking for money, of course)... didn't understand him the 2nd time, asked again to repeat.... so, picture a guy who's clearly annoyed, who has ~4 teeth, speaking very slowly and as clear as possible "Do. You. Need. A. Place. To. Smoke. Crack?"

I almost felt bad telling him no.

We could have a whole 'Fun With Crackheads' segment.

My fun tactic these days is when they ask, "Change?", I respond with, "Oh, no, I couldn't take your money."

I think there's a correlation between being a panhandler and not getting a joke, because this always confuses them, and as I pass by, I'll sometimes hear them say, "No, I'm asking YOU for money."

I'd nod and go 'Oh...' as I kept walking.
