The Language Of The Road

One of my favorite things is driving cross country. It's so peaceful and something I must do from time to time. Just me, music, snacks, weed, my fellow travelers, and the language of the road. I eat what I want, when I want and piss in some pretty shady shitters. And always a Suzie-Q. That's just tradition.

It's great to group up with fellow travelers and create a convoy, with cars taking turns leading the pack. An unspoken rule. When someone needs to exit, they always flash their lights to say thanks and safe travels.

If I have to pass a Trucker on his right, I'll flash my lights to let him know I'm coming through. Heck, I do it on his left too. I'm sure they appreciate it.

When a truck is passing me, I flash my lights on/off when his trailer is clear. Always cool getting that on/off returned.

Always. Always. Always. If a guy comes up behind me, I pull over and let him pass. Always. Then I'll match speed. New travel buddy.

If I have to squeeze in, or do something foolish, you will always see me stick my arm out of the car with a piece sign, a wave or devil horns to acknowledge it or to say thanks.

What are some other examples of the language of the road?

I prefer to drive all night and always take the time to check out the stars out in the middle of the desert. Stunning.

I run at 9 mph over posted speed (highway) and have had Patrolmen come up on me and run my plates, then blow past. Sometimes flashing their lights at me on the way by. One shined his spotlight at me as he went by. I do flash my headlights on/off and we both go our separate ways.

I dunno. I love it.

Pretty, though. I think my most memorable was(clearly wish the circumstances were different)in September of 2011.

I was living in GA at the time and was helping a friend of mine move to Phoenix. As in, I was driving her car to PHX and then I was to fly back. We heard the broadcast of the 2nd plane hitting the tower while getting gas somewhere in Louisiana. We got to PHX ok but there was no way I was boarding a plane on 9/13. Only rental available in the state of Arizona was a uhaul. I bought an American Flag and affixed it to that truck and on 9/13 2011, I drove from Arizona back to Georgia, by myself. What I witnessed I will never, ever forget. American flags flew everywhere, strangers hugging and shaking hands at gas stations and diners, homemade signs posted along the highways and back roads, so many honks and waves. It was so sad yet so hopeful at the same time. I didn't even totally get the gravity, at age 23, that I do now. It's one of the most meaningful events of my life.

Man I miss long road trips.

Its been my experience that a good many of them are indeed huge assholes, but that just puts them on par with most people in their personal cars and trucks

People are quite shitty to truckers out on the road

Doing a 12 state road trip to the east coast to visit my son in the Navy this summer.

Trying to avoid all Interstates and do old highways and scenic drives. Heading down through the Smokey Mountains to South Carolina. The driving the Outer Banks all the way up. Going to hit 5 National Parks and take about 10 thousand pics.

I could just live on the road, traveling, camping, and exploring the best country in the world.

Took a quickie road trip out to Big Bend national park a couple weeks ago. Amazing scenery. Can't believe I did that over the course of a weekend. A good road trip is a great way to break out of your routine and clear your head. As far as rules of the road, I remember that I'm in Texas and people are more than likely armed. It's best to let the road rage go.

Interstate 40 is notorious for those damn 61 MPH vs 61.00000000009 BigRigger races. A new law might get the left lane BigRigger a fine especially if a carvan of cars is behind them. They actually should fine the companies for the regulators and tattlers they put in the trucks. But like Dayze said some common sense would be better if they would work to make the pass much faster.
