Chiefs Who is the best Chiefs backup QB since Rich Gannon? - Page 4

Poll forthcoming.

The criteria:

1. We are talking about players who have served as the primary backup during a given game. They are first off the bench. Third stringers who never move beyond 3rd string do not count (i.e. Joe Germaine or Ted White)

2. A 3rd stringer who is pushed into the backup role when the 2nd string QB enters the game is considered the primary backup QB. Thus, Tyler Bray and Aaron Murray, who both became backup QBs on days that Alex Smith was inactivated, have been backup QBs for this team.

3. Non-QB passers such as Mark Bradley are not eligible, despite the fact that they were active players who would have been taking all the snaps should anything have happened to the two QBs above them on the depth chart.

4. We are evaluating QBs according to their playing ability when they were Chiefs. Warren Moon's career prior to being a Chief should not be considered in your evaluation, nor should you consider Todd Collins' starts with the Redskins and Bears.

Huard.

He kept the team in the playoff hunt when Green was injured. That alone makes him the best backup, especially considering the great Mike Solari was the OC.

Honorable mention goes to Daniel. He went 1-1 as a starter and should have been 2-0 had it not been for Succop's easy miss.

I'm so glad Succop's gone.

Point of clarification, is this the best QB to hold the position of backup in KC, or the best use of their backup tenure while in KC?

Your starter goes down. You can have 1999-2000 Warren Moon. Or 1998-2005 Todd Collins. Or 2007-2008 Tyler Thigpen. Etc. Which one would you pick as the best QB?

I think Dane might be right, actually.

I mean, I didn't love Huard's propensity to turtle when things got a little hairy on occasion, but he did pretty credible work here.

Foles is probably the most gifted but the best resume is almost certainly Huard's.

He might not be the most talented QB in the group but this is based on production with the Chiefs when pressed into service after starting QB got injured.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but he's the only one there who led the Chiefs to a playoff appearance.

In our 4-12 2007 season, Huard went 4-3.

The dude took that team and gave them a winning record through 7 games.

Hell, he went 1-1 as a starter in 2008 for crying out loud.

Before Alex Smith was Mr. Inexplicable Wins, there was Damon Huard.
