Chiefs expected to trade quarterback Alex Smith; Browns could be in the mix

http://www.news-herald.com/sports/20...-be-in-the-mix

Jeff Schudel, The News-Herald & The Morning Journal

Alex Smith might be one day closer to becoming the 29th quarterback to start for the Browns since 1999.

Smith, the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs since 2013, will be on the trading block when the 2018 league year begins on March 14, according to a report by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. That isn’t exactly a bulletin; the Chiefs traded up to draft quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the 2017 draft and are eager to get the Mahomes era going.

The Chiefs’ 2017 playoff season ended on Jan. 6 with a stunning 22-21 loss at home to the Tennessee Titans. Smith completed 24 of 33 passes for 264 yards and two touchdowns.

Browns General Manager John Dorsey was GM of the Chiefs for five years before taking the same job with the Browns. One of his first moves in his former job was to trade a 2013 second-round pick plus a conditional pick to the 49ers for Smith, the first pick in the 2005 draft.

A Smith-to-the-Browns offseason trade was speculated the day Dorsey was named Browns general manager.

Smith, who turns 34 in May, is coming off the best statistical season of his career. He passed for 4,042 yards while throwing 26 touchdown passes and only five interceptions. His 104.7 passer rating led the NFL.

Smith is due $14.5 million in 2018, then he’ll be a free agent. This makes him an ideal candidate to mentor a young quarterback for a season and then move on.

Browns head coach Hue Jackson has made it clear he wants a veteran quarterback on his team next season. He does not want to go through another season in which no quarterback on the roster has an NFL victory. That was the case when the 2017 began with DeShone Kizer, Cody Kessler and Kevin Hogan. It ended the same way with the Browns finishing 0-16.

“It’s a challenge, but what difference does it make right now?” Jackson said on Dec. 20. “I’m just being very honest. Nobody is going change the record because that’s the situation. It is what it is. That has a lot to do with a lot of different things as you go through it.”

If the Browns trade for Smith, it’s unlikely to change the Browns’ plans about drafting a quarterback. The Browns have the first, fourth, 33rd and 35th overall picks plus nine more.

Dorsey has made it clear improving quarterback is his top priority. He cannot talk publicly about a potential trade for Smith, but he and the Chiefs can work out the details of a trade before March 14. The trade with the 49ers was agreed upon before it happened.

It is worth noting Smith was nothing special as a quarterback until he was united with Coach Andy Reid in Kansas City. He played more than 11 games only twice in seven years with the 49ers, going 7-9 in 2006 and 13-3 in 2011, when he threw 17 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Smith was 38-36-1 as a starter with the 49ers. He is 50-26 with the Chiefs.

The emphasis is on schemed up bombs vs 1 on 1 coverage, deep in cuts, deep out cuts, and deep comebacks. Alex is not that type of QB. I think Jacksonville or Buffalo are much more likely landing spots, and either one of those teams would be very dangerous with him under center.

I'm not so sure he even leaves K.C. though. When you get rid of a guy that played the way he did this year that move will usually come back and bite you in the ass. I love hating on his shortfalls as much as the next guy, but realistically the problem with this football team isn't Alex, it's a piss poor defense and inability to stop the run.
Hue Jackson has a lot of experience with WCO and Dorsey's experience is primarily in WCO. Hue doesn't have a lot of leverage to pick his offense. He's lucky he's allowed to pick an offensive coordinator at all.

I'm not at all concerned about getting "bit in the ass." After all this time, we know Alex's ceiling. I like what he did for us but we need to start thinking about our ceiling, not our floor.

There is plenty of blame to go around. Combination of Andy's butt puckering play calling in the 2nd half and our porous defense. But our offense looked like the in the 2nd half. 3 and out, 3 and out, 3 and out !! Yes our defense sucks but a sucky defense cannot be on the field even more time when your offense is choosing to be inept. That just sets your sucky defense up to epically fail for sure especially when your biggest playmaking d-lineman is out and you already suck in the defensive trench play not being to stuff the run.

There are a few teams that need QBs but there are several QBs available too. Not to mention the draft. It may not be as easy to find a trade partner for Smith as some of you think. I still say Jacksonville is likely.

What an amazing concept. Play towards the strength of your football team. Everyone and their dog knew the Chiefs defense stinks so you dont leave it up to them to finish a ballgame.

Yea overall team failure. But surest way to being an elite team is a productive QB-HC combo. Andy & Alex are simply not that. Since Andy is going nowhere the obvious spotlight is on Alex. Glad that the FO realized it after the Steelers loss. Hope they also see the light with Sutton.

WTF do these get posted? There's no actual news in there. Might as well write an article that says...

Alex Smith is an NFL quarterback.
The Cleveland Browns are an NFL team.
Hmmm.....
