I wonder if he was the first multi-faceted character on TV. It seems like characters before him were either true-blood white hat people or they were mustache-twirling villains. He was actually a good guy with bad traits or a bad guy with good traits.

I guess you could argue that Lucy Ricardo had both good and bad traits, but her bad traits were more weaknesses than duplicity.
