The position at the top of our 2024 draft board right now:

It's far too early, of course, but if you had to bet on a position being a the #1 position of need for next offseason, it's....

poll forthcoming.

Donovon Smith being penciled in as the starter and Taylor not taking much snap wise at LT would be what I would use to determine said factor.

Buddy, we've been on the Andy Reid roster carousel for ten years now.

Get it together.

Okay. That means they found a viably cheap option at LT and opted to leave Taylor at RT. That doesn't mean they think he isn't a potential option at LT down the line.

That said, I'm holding out hope that we make a run at Tee Higgins next offseason. I know it's not really Veach's M.O., but still......

I don't know if a pass rushing DT is exactly a necessity. Obviously the Chris Jones contract situation is going to shine a spotlight on our DT's behind Jones but the Chiefs have invested significant capital on rushing the passer with Karlaftis, FAU and Omenihu. Our young edge rushers still need a little bit of time to develop but I think the Chiefs defense would still be okay with a run stopping defensive tackle ala DJ Reader. The majority of the NFL doesn't get the benefit of being able to rush the QB from the inside as effectively as the Chiefs do.

I honestly think Chris Jones might be pricing himself out of town if he is hellbent on receiving an Aaron Donald contract. The Chiefs 100% need to reevaluate the DT position but I wouldn't be too concerned about find a player who specifically fills an archetype. We don't need to find the next Chris Jones, we need to find players who can be an effective tool for Spags whether it is in the pass or run game.

Right - this is why I don't necessarily adhere to the 'we need to replace Kelce' school.

Kelce's a Hall of Famer. You don't 'replace' those. You work around those. When we lost Hill there was no sense in trying to 'replace' him - we reconfigured and found new ways to succeed.

If we lose Jones, the priority isn't to find another pass-rushing DT because you're not just gonna find a guy that does what Jones does - they don't really exist in any meaningful supply.

But you find ways to succeed in new ways. And if in the attempts to do so, you eventually find a reasonable facsimile to Jones - huzzah! But the idea that we need to put a Jones 2.0 on our draft board doesn't wash with me because honestly, we weren't looking for THIS version of Jones when we found him. The Chiefs didn't even figure they were getting a guy with a HoF peak when they drafted him; they damn sure don't wait until 50 to pick him if they did.

Right. There were 30 other teams in the league without a pass rush threat on Jones' level, and about half of them were statistically better defenses.

Jonesy's a great player, and I hope they keep him, but if not, there are other paths.

Same with Kelce. I think that's why they've gone for the youth movement at WR now, while Kelce is still Kelce. The best way to prepare for life after dominant Kelce is to draft and develop the WR corps for the next group of stars.

You trade Jones and then trade for Brian Burns is what you do.
