Q&A Dick Vermeil 8/8

Q&A with DICK VERMEIL
Aug 08, 2005, 11:22:55 AM

TRAINING CAMP

Morning
Q: I guess there are going to be mornings like this or days like this (inclement weather forces team indoors)

DICK VERMEIL: “You hope you don’t have any, but at least it wasn’t a scheduled padded practice outside. They told me there was a probability of lightning all the way up through 9 o’clock so we came inside.”

Q: So how much do you lose having to come indoors?

VERMEIL: “You lose the quickness and high intensity repetition which also helps you develop conditioning and stamina.”

Q: This indoor set-up is better?

VERMEIL: “What they ought to do now is go to the next level and put a roll-out pad in here. But you really can’t get good fundamental work. There’s no testing involved, how well your fundamentals are working.”

Q: Do you have more information on when Gonzalez will be back?

VERMEIL: “No, nothing exact. But all the reports are good.”

Q: But you don’t think he’ll be play Friday night?

VERMEIL: “I don’t know.”

Q: Anything different this week in preparation for the first game Friday night?

VERMEIL: “We’ll take two practice sessions and use them for game time preparations similar to what we do in-season. It helps get us ready for the in-season practices as well. It’s a totally different type of practice than we use when we’re working against ourselves. We actually have scout teams and prepare the guys as if it were a regular season game. It’s both educational and preparational.”

Q: The defensive line was one of the areas where there wasn’t a lot of change. Is that a testament that you were happy with that position?

VERMEIL: “We felt we needed to invest some money in the secondary and linebacker position. So, that’s what we did. We already had a first round pick in Ryan Sims and the other people we had re-signed like Eric Hicks. He had a big year last year as did Jared Allen and then we went after Carlos Hall. We feel that we have enough depth there.

“Ryan Sims has had his best camp so far, his best practice so far the other night.”

Q: How exciting is it for you knowing how excited fans are as they look forward to this week’s pre-season game?

VERMEIL: “Who? Q: Fans.

VERMEIL: “I don’t think fans put too much stock in it, I really don’t.

Q: A lot of them watch.

VERMEIL: “I think they all watch and they should, but I don’t think they base their evaluation process on what kind of team you’re going to be in your first pre-season game. It’s very misleading.”

Q: What’s the most noticeable change you’ve seen in Ryan Sims?

VERMEIL: “Concentration in technique. He’s always had good work habits but his off-season was the most disciplined that he’s had in terms of self-discipline and getting ready to play. I’m pleased with him.

“I don’t know how long it takes to be what you have the ability to be. We kind of believe that the consensus is three years, so it’s time. It’s time for him to be what we thought he was going to be. He’s had some snaps over the years that sort of demonstrated his sixth pick in the draft abilities. There’s been a number of snaps on the practice field that have demonstrated that, too.”

Q: Did you guys talk to him in the off-season?

VERMEIL: “We always talk a little bit but he knows what he has to do. Coaches get paid to talk to players.”

Q: What are your expectations of Derrick Johnson?

VERMEIL: “I think he’ll end up being a starter; I think he’ll play well and I think he’ll be a candidate for the rookie of the year on defense. Other than that, I don’t have an opinion. (laughs)

“We haven’t played a game yet, but you just watch what he does on the practice field and watch him on tape, just watch his ability to diagnose quickly and flash into plays and all. The only thing he doesn’t have his experience.”

Q: Was there surprise in your draft room when he was available?

VERMEIL: “No, not really. We felt there was a chance he would be there. I think when Detroit picked the wide receiver, then looking at the other teams’ needs, we started thinking that he might drop to us.”

The coaches are really rolling out the compliments on DJ.

Those 48 hrs of the offseason when we got Surtain and then DJ were unbelievable. Let's hope they translate into a real reemergence of our D

Once again, thank God Thomas Davis went one pick earlier.

EDWARDS: No, I have not.”

26 tackles, 6 assists, and 5 sacks is a good year?

That's not even 2 tackles a game, barely one sack every three games.
