I can't believe some of the things these kids were writing about in thier class assignments and planners. There were warning signs everywhere. I can only imagine what could have been avoided if ONE teacher would have checked their planners.

As an elementary school teacher, I check planners on a daily basis. I know that for high school that may be too much to ask, but the homeroom teacher could check planners weekly or monthly.

Sorry, but as a parent I think this should have been stopped at the home level. Teachers should be teaching, not policing.

Looking at some of that stuff, a lot of the pictures appear to me to be related to a video game (Ramstein). However, the "Trench Coat Mafia" part was a bit chilling. It states that they raised capital to start this "business" from personal resources and relocated people. By relocation they mean killed. I wonder if these kids were ever tied to unsolved murders in the area.

You raise in interesting point at the end there, Mr. Hydrae.

It's a sin that neither the parents nor the school officials had an inkling that something was up with these two fools. Never in 1000 years would my son be able to build a pipe bomb in our home without my knowledge. Not possible.

I agree the parents should share the responsibility, but the essay that should have been walked straight to the guidance office or given to someone in a higher position.

That's just ridiculous. Do you know how many high schools are full of essays like that one? How about: all of them. And of course the vast majority of those kids aren't going to kill anyone.

Seriously, if kids want to do bad things they will find a way without parents knowing about it. If they can't get away at your home, then they will go elsewhere, but if they want to there isn't a lot you can do to stop them.

I'm not condoning what they did because there is no excuse for walking in to a school and brutally murdering other students but I do think that bullying is a big part of why this happens. It's almost equivilant to an office or postal worker who snaps and blows away his co-workers except in the students case you have to go to school and be around these people. I've seen a lot of the high school jocks and more popular types do some pretty ****ed up shit to some kids and watched as teachers and administrators did nothing. I've seen those same kids who fight back get in big trouble while nothing happens to the party who was doing the bullying.

I find all of this stuff utterly fascinating, and at the same time incredibly sad. It's perhaps a bit more comforting for people to think of them as inhuman monsters, but the fact of the matter is that they were both as human as it gets. They were hurting, they were sociopathic, and they chose the absolute worst way possible to deal with their problems... but they were people.

I agree. I think I probably wrote some pretty graphic papers in my day. I was just one way to rebel against the school, while masking it as doing what those nazi teachers demanded of me.

Besides, as others have said, it's not a teacher's job to police these kids. I'm tired of teachers getting the blame for the shortcomings of parents, whether on this issue or in ridiculous stuff like No Child Left Behind.
