Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt has passed away. He was 74.
Oakland Raiders Owner Al Davis said, "I have much admiration for his love of professional football and, of course, the American Football League, which he started.

We were rivals, we were friends, we were competitors.

Lamar Hunt is a legend and will be sorely missed as he has been a part of our lives for the past five decades.

Our hearts and emotions go out to his wife, Norma, sons Lamar and Clark and the rest of the family."

"We were competitors for 23 years, twice a year," Broncos President/CEO Pat Bowlen said. "You all know about Lamar's history in the National Football League and what he meant to the National Football League and the merger, but he meant a lot to me. He was a great guy to ask questions when I was younger. He was a great mentor and we were great competitors."

A strength of Hunt's was the ability to make decisions in the best interest of the league as a whole, not just his own franchise.

"I think that's one of the things I took away from my relationship with him is when you're thinking about just your team, you're doing the wrong thing," Bowlen said. "You've got to think about the league and what the implications are for the league. That's very true and I learned that. I like to think that way too.

"It's always great to think about you and your team, but if we don't have 31 other teams all thinking as one group or all 32 teams thinking as one group at times we have big problems. Lamar always addressed it that way."

Hunt's fingerprints can be found all over today's NFL, including the name 'Super Bowl' and an inaugural third Thanksgiving Day game this season, which featured Hunt's Chiefs hosting the Broncos.

Despite his importance to professional football, the character of Hunt the man is what many will remember the most.

"(He was) one of the few owners who would actually go out of his way to come up to you as an assistant coach or a coordinator or head coach and sit down and talk to you," Head Coach Mike Shanahan said. "I knew him. He came up to me when I was just an assistant coach -- actually started a conversation once. That doesn't happen very often. I've had a chance to know him for a number of years and obviously he's meant a lot to the league…just a good gentleman and a good man.

"We'll miss him."

I’ll miss my friend and the entire National Football League will miss him as well.”

Since the theme of this thread is others commenting on him, I figured I'd add Bill Belichick's comments, though he's obviously not AFC West. Keep in mind that this was in response to a question, and not a prepared statement.


Belichick on Hunt

Patriots coach Bill Belichick was asked to speak about Lamar Hunt, the Kansas City Chiefs owner who died Wednesday at age 74.

"I think he was certainly one of the founding fathers of the AFL and the AFL-NFL merger and how all of that came about," Belichick said at his Thursday press conference. "He was a huge staunch supporter of the AFL and then as it is now the AFC. I think that franchise has had a good impact on the entire league. I think the Kansas City fans and their whole football environment on game day and Arrowhead and all that they’ve created there has been something that certainly has been an invigorating part of the game. It's hard to play there, but I'm just saying the whole environment that they've created. Lamar has been there through it all and I said [Wednesday], I had the opportunity to be in Kansas City for that 101 Dinner, which is one of the top postseason award dinners for football. It honors not just pro football, it's a first-class thing. He's been a big part of that and it’s comparable to the Maxwell Club and The Touchdown Club of Washington, and stuff like that. They've done a lot of things right out there, a lot of things to promote the game of football and I think a lot of things done in the spirit of the game that I respect. Certainly, he’s a big part of that. I've had minimal direct contact with him, owners meetings and stuff like that, that 101 Club dinner, the Super Bowl and that type of deal, but truly a gentleman, a smart guy and very respectful. I think he respected the game a lot too. When he spoke in league meetings you always had the sense that he was speaking from the heart, Wellington Mara-ish, what was best for the game. It wasn’t about what was best for the Chiefs. It was about what was best for the game and I think that came across in a genuine, sincere manner, so I believed it. It's a tough loss."

That just shows you what kind of guy Lamar was if his bitter rivals on the field makes comments like that. Lamar was one of those guys who you could never really dislike.


I wish I would have been able to meet him.

This is probably in poor taste (by me) considering the sentiment expressed, but hypocracy here grates on me. If Bowlen really did learn from Lamar and did consider the affect he and his team had on the rest of the league, the Broncos wouldn't have circumvented the cap, manipulated the draft, or allowed their players to use dirty play (legal or not).

For Bowlen to compare himself to Lamar in any way other than being a team owner is a slap to what Mr. Hunt stood for. The sefishness of owners like Bowlen (for disregard of the rules and ethics of the league), Jerry Jones and Dan Snyder (for putting the financial well-being of their teams above the league) is about as far away from Lamar Hunt as you can get.

Flame away if you want, but I'm in a bad mood and this stuff pisses me off.

How will everybody feel when Al Davis passes away. Personally I will be sad because then the Raiders will have a chance to become a contender.

I don't think your post is poor taste at all... actually it is dead on. In some cases I don't think it is really that owners faults for winning at any cost because of the mentality of the fans in say Denver and Dallas. I have lived in both cities and they have the most fair weather band wagon fans in existence. THe Chiefs and Arrowhead are like visiting an old friend just for a good time and something you will always remember other the business approach to the game.

I know this is what Lamar brought to this game and I hope that Carl will follow in his fathers footsteps.
