check out xbox-scene.com you don't need a chip for the original xbox. Just a firmware upgrade to the hard drive. Here is the link to the free mod i'm currently using with a 160gb hard drive.
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=496263 hope it helps. ![]()

The whole mod chip scene seemed too complicated for me, so I went the flip-top lid route with my PS2. I have no complaints at all. A monkey with a brain injury could install the new cover and swap the discs out, and I think it was cheaper than the mod chips, too.

don't bother with a hard mod on an xbox. The best way to do it is softmod. The way I did mine, you save a file on a memory card from your computer, I got mine at xbox-scene. Then I bought the original splinter cell (there are a couple other games that work too, i think mechassault or something) you then load the file from that game, and it basically corrupts your system, and reloads with the new interface. You can do everything with it that you can with a hardmod. Lots of people actually prefer this route, because you can turn the mod on and off, so you still have access to xboxlive, yet you have all the features that a hardmod gives.

http://www.consoleforce.com/store/index.php?cPath=32 You should see a few options there for "Swap Magic and Flip-Top combo", although I'm not sure what the differences are between the versions they offer. They don't seem to explain it, either. You could also try this link at the official Swap Magic site, which lists a bunch of retailers you can buy their stuff at: http://www.swapmagic3.com/Swap_Magic_Where_To_Buy.asp The Swap Magic discs are what you use to fool the PS2 into thinking that a legit game has started. As you can tell by that first link, you can buy them without a flip-top lid. But without the flip-top, you have to use this thing called a slide card that you jam into your PS2 and rip out the CD tray with. I figured the flip-top lid would save my old beat-up PS2 some wear and tear, so I went with the flip-top combo. You basically just unscrew the old case and put on a new one that has a flip-top lid over the area where the DVD rests. Then say you've got a game burned onto a DVD-R. You start the PS2 and put in the Swap Magic DVD, which will load and then give you a screen telling you to put in the game. You flip up the lid, take out the Swap Magic DVD, and put in the DVD-R (you gotta make sure it's set in there correctly... after doing it a while, you'll know if it is). Then you hit the X button on the control and the game starts. It's really easy. |

The real reason is that you can download games you never paid for, burn 'em, and play 'em. |

If you want to play Xbox Live after modding, you should go with a mod chip. Otherwise, go with a soft mod. It's much easier, and you can still play online games, just not on Live servers. I've got all the software you'd need, including the retail 007:AUF disk, and the memory save that works with it.
I've done over a dozen Xboxs, both mod chips, TSOP soldering, and soft mod. I've got a Xenium chip in mine, with a 250 GB HD. But if you decide on a chip, I'd go with the Executer 3. It's got a switch that disables the mod chip and let's you run retail games on Xbox Live. I've got all the emulators you could want... Atari, MAME, NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis. That includes thousands of emulator games. I've also got backups of about 75 Xbox Games... I know nothing about the PS2 though, can't help you there. But if you need any more info, or you'd like help with software, copies of games or something, let me know. I'd be glad to help you out.

If you've never heard about it before... once your Xbox is modded, jump right in to Xbox Media Center. It also launches games, and displays them as icons, but they can't say that for legal purposes...
LINK It does just about everything. Here's a short description from the site... There's much more detailed info on the site, so check it out. The XboxMediaCenter Project: XboxMediaCenter is a free open source (GPL) multimedia player for the Xbox™ from Microsoft. Currently XboxMediaCenter can be used to play/view most common video/audio/picture formats such as MPEG-1/2/4, DivX, XviD, MP3, AAC, JPG, GIF plus many more less known formats directly from a CD/DVD in Xbox DVD-ROM drive or of Xbox hard-drive, XBMC can also stream files from a PC over a local network and even stream media streams directly from the internet. XBMC has playlist and slideshow functions, a weather forecast and many audio visualizations. All these features enable the Xbox™ running XboxMediaCenter to fully function as a multimedia jukebox. XBMC is easy to install and use, it's very convenient and flexible plus offers a great price/performance ratio. XBMC is of also course completely free of any adware or spyware. (This, The XboxMediaCenter Project is also known as "Xbox Media Center" or simply "XBMC"). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

hint hint you can put any size maxtor hard drive into the ps2 but you MUST install a mod chip 1st. You will need the network adapter because it has the ide hard drive hookup built into it, but the hard part is soldering the wires to the mod chip. I have a modded xbox and ps2 and almost all the games are available for both and the xbox looks tons better than the ps2.
