LAWRENCE | Kansas freshmen basketball players Marcus and Markieff Morris have been cleared by the NCAA clearinghouse and will be eligible to play for the Jayhawks this fall, KU coach Bill Self announced in a statement on Thursday.
Marcus and Markieff Morris, twins from Philadelphia, spent last year in prep school at Apex Academies in Pennsauken, N.J., trying to get qualified. KU associate athletics director for external relations Jim Marchiony said the Morris twins will be in class on Friday.
“We certainly understand the uniqueness of these circumstances,” Self said. “So we appreciate the NCAA’s cooperation in reviewing the material involved in a timely manner. We felt all along that the twins had successfully completed their required courses, but we respect the fact that we had to go through this process. The main issue now is for them to begin their academic career at KU.”
KU will now have its full allotment of players available, including seven newcomers from a class that Rivals.com ranked No. 2 in the country. The Jayhawks had to play without the Morris twins in their Canadian exhibition last weekend, which saw them narrowly beat two teams and romp a third.
The next question is how Self will choose to discipline Markieff Morris, who has been charged with battery after being accused of shooting a woman with an airsoft BB gun from a window in Jayhawker Towers. Morris has a Dec. 12 court date, and Self has said that Morris will be punished.
