Football Outsiders Ranks Matt Cassel 44th of 46 QBs

Giving him a ranking of 463 yards below replacement level.

QBs who finished behind Cassel: Stafford and Russell.

QBs who finished ahead of Cassel: Everyone else in the NFL who threw more than 100 passes.

On a positive note, he was 38/46 on a per play basis, narrowly edging out Josh Freeman.

On another positive note, Brodie Croyle would have finished 25 had he accumulated enough attempts.

Top 5 QBs (In order)

1. Brady
2. Manning
3. Rivers
4. Brees
5. Favre

Revised as of 1/4/2009

Quarterbacks are ranked according to DYAR, or Defense-adjusted Yards Above Replacement. This gives the value of the quarterback's performance compared to replacement level, adjusted for situation and opponent and then translated into yardage. DYAR (and its cousin, YAR, which isn't adjusted based on opponent) is further explained here.
The other statistic given is DVOA, or Defense-adjusted Value Over Average. This number represents value, per play, over an average quarterback in the same game situations. The more positive the DVOA rating, the better the player's performance. Negative DVOA represents below-average offense. DVOA (and its cousin, VOA, which isn't adjusted based on opponent) is further explained here.
The simple version: DYAR means a quarterback with more total value. DVOA means a quarterback with more value per play.

To be fair, that's a list not necessarily accurate of a QB's worth. Aaron Rodgers is better than half of the guys ranked above him.

But still, it's got the right players slotted in roughly the right spots. That's pretty damning evidence against Cassel.

If you gave him an offensive line, I doubt his numbers would go up that much. Maybe he might make it above replacement level.

So, out of Brady, Manning Rivers, Brees, Favre, Romo, Schaub and Roethlisberger, which 5 do you think Rodgers is better than?

He was 35/38 QBs in rushing, so we've got that going for us.

Okay, I exagerrated when I said half. I WOULD rather have him than Romo, Schaub, and Roethlisberger, though. And of course, Favre, but since this is a statistical analysis based on play for one year, I would say Favre was a better QB than Rodgers this year.

On a positive note, he was 38/46 on a per play basis, narrowly edging out Josh Freeman.

On another positive note, Brodie Croyle would have finished 25 had he accumulated enough attempts.
