First Mock

1. Brandon Cooks, WR, Oregon St- small WR with excellent speed and quickness. Polished and has the versatility to play outside or inside. Plays much bigger than his size would indicate and will go up and fight for balls. Tough and plays with a chip. Better WR prospect than Tavon Austin as he has similar potential but a much higher floor and I was praying we'd get a trade down and take him last year.

3. Terrence Brooks, FS, Florida St- solid free safety prospect with upside. Great speed and good ball skills. Can play centerfield but is also solid against the run. Possible day 1 starter and can compete with Commings in camp.

4. Aaron Lynch, OLB, South Florida- great size and flashed some pass rush ability throughout his college career. Raw prospect with good upside, just needs to put it all together. Could sit and learn the position while providing depth. Possible replacement for Hali in the near future. Should be a better pro than college player.

5. DeAnthony Thomas, RB, Oregon- we could use a guy like this behind Charles and Davis to take a few snaps a game and maintain that home run ability in the backfield. We saw how quickly we could be down to our third RB in the playoff game. This guy and Cooks make our offense much more explosive.

6. Zach Fulton, OG, Tennessee- Dorsey seems to love big guys that can move on the offensive line and this gives us another interior guy to develop as a potential starter.

6. Brandon Dixon, CB, NW Missouri St- local sleeper. Press corner with a good size to speed ratio. Impressive at the combine with his measurable and on the field work.

I love Cooks as our first rounder more and more. Terrance Brooks in the 3rd is both realistic and smart. If those were our first two picks in May, I think it's a win for the Chiefs in the near and long-term.

Lynch and Thomas I really, really dislike. Lynch is just a headcase who played well for one year and everybody wonders if it'll ever come back. Thomas is a very hard worker, but he's never carried the ball 100 times in a college season. I'd prefer a guy who could potentially take over. Thomas gives us, what, 5 snaps a game?

Fulton's fine. Dixon's a really interesting pick in the 6th... Can't say I dislike it at all. I agree that he actually looked pretty sharp at the Combine.

I agree with Direck... swap Chris Smith in for Aaron Lynch and Terrance West, Isaiah Crowell, or even Marion Grice in there for Thomas and you've got a nice draft. JMO.

I'm starting to think Beckham doesn't last.

He's, what, the 3rd WR on everybody's board now?

Yeah that's possible. He does get off the line and move extremely well (which is why I suggested him.) The 4th round looks like a tough place to pick up a 3-4 OLB.

I guess if you're targeting Lynch, it might make sense to bump that RB pick up a round to get a better guy, then take Lynch in the 5th. Just another suggestion.

Cooks has been the third WR on mine since the season ended. He gets the best separation of any WR in the draft.

Just curious.......how long do you think that big Florida State WR is going to stay on the board? and do you think he is worth a look?

Well again, I'm no expert.

I don't like Benjamin -- I probably should, but he reminds me too much of Johnny Baldwin. He doesn't come with Baldwin's baggage, but he does come with Baldwin's inability to separate. His speed is all distance speed -- he's not a fast or quick slant guy, and just about any competent NFL corner will be in his hip pocket all game.

The question then becomes, how well does he use his body? If he can't get free, can he use his great frame to make himself open, like Gonzalez used to, or like Mike Evans does now. And, well, mileage may vary between guys like me and others on this board, but this guy did not have to make a lot of physical, shield-off receptions for the Seminoles because college football is college football. Which means that's technique that he's going to have to pick up in the NFL.

In my very humble opinion, that means he's going to give you iffy numbers his rookie year, and his production afterwards will depend on how well you think you can coach this guy up.

I don't like the guy, but I hold grudges. I was burnt by Baldwin, and I don't want to get burnt by Benjamin just because I once again fall in love with a guy's measurables.

I'm a big Cooks/Beckham guy.

Thanks. I appreciate your opinion. We are somewhat in agreement with the Baldwin comparison. This is also part of my knock on Bowe. Now that we have a good QB and speedy #2 and #3 options in Avery and Jenkins it seems Alex is more willing to look their way thus rendering Bowe less effective. IMO it appears Smith doesn't like what he is seeing downfield in terms of Bowes ability to get separation.

Bowe has shown really good ability to body out corners, though, since the day he entered the league. I think he and Alex Smith had to build more chemistry as the year went along. He's also just weak, mentally, which is why he has no game winning catches and seemingly never comes up big.

Direckshun I agree 100% with your assessment. I think Benjamin's success depends as much on what QB he gets matched up with as does his skill due to his inability to create separation on his own. He does use his body well but he needs a QB that can be precise with the ball to fully take advantage of that. I wrote about that on my site.

Not a big fan of the rest, but your first two picks of Cooks and Brooks makes this a good draft, IMHO.

You had me at Cooks... sure hope we take him, start him in the slot, with Bowe and (fingers crossed) Jenkins outside.

That'd give us a body and two burners in three wide sets, perfect symmetry IMO.
