Q&A with DICK VERMEIL
Aug 07, 2005, 12:49:26 PM

TRAINING CAMP

Morning
Q: How is Dustin Colquitt making the adjustment to holding for Lawrence Tynes?

DICK VERMEIL: “I keep asking the kicker because he tells you best and he’s pleased. He’s never used it as an excuse for missing one, so I would say he’s doing a good job.”

Q: But he probably wouldn’t use it as an excuse, would he?

VERMEIL: “Well, I think he would if (holder) not doing a good job. If he’s doing a good job I don’t think he would use it as an excuse if he missed one. But I think he would be honest and say, ‘coach, he’s not good enough yet.’ But so far he’s very positive about it.”

Q: You were concerned about Colquitt’s consistency early. Has that been resolved in your mind?

VERMEIL: “Well, he’s more consistent. The day before yesterday – or was it yesterday? – the worst hang time he had was 4.9 (seconds). He had an unbelievable day. Will he always be that consistent? I hope so, but I doubt it. But I think he is more consistent today than he was a week ago.”

Q: See any change in Tynes now that he doesn’t have any competition?

VERMEIL: “In the NFL he’s always competing for a job because there’s somebody else on a roster that’s going to be released. If he doesn’t do a good job at that position you usually bring a guy in.

“He’s been good, not great. He’s missed one every time we’ve had a field goal session which is disappointing. But I still have confidence in him. I think he’s a good kicker. Obviously, that’s why we don’t have any other kickers here. If he proves me wrong then we’ll have to do something to broaden competition. Right now, he’s our kicker and I think he’ll be a good one.”

Q: How’s Tony Gonzalez doing?

VERMEIL: “They x-rayed his foot this morning and there’s nothing broken or anything like that. But he’s sore and he has a chronic foot problem and every once in a while he hits in a way where he irritates it. Last night he did that. I don’t know how much practice time he’s going to miss but he’ll miss a little time.”

Q: We presume this is the same foot he had surgery on.

VERMEIL: “Same foot, right below the surgery.”

Q: Kris Wilson?

VERMEIL: “Groin strain.”

Q: That’s kind of scary that you have your top three tight ends out.

VERMEIL: “Oh, you bet. You have two tight ends left to work and neither of them have played in the National Football League. The kids struggled last night but they gave us the best that they had and enabled us to practice. We should get Jason Dunn back this afternoon.”

Q: There’s no substitute for what these rookies and first year players are going to see this Friday night. You can’t simulate an NFL game.

VERMEIL: “Right. You really can’t and I don’t even try to. We try to work at a tempo that’s close to game tempo but we don’t finish plays with full-speed tackling and knock down drag out blocking. In a way it sends them in a little less prepared but I’ve always used the pre-season games to help us get prepared for that phase of the game. You’ve seen our practices and we hit and bang each other around, and get mad at each other from time to time. But we don’t scrimmage each other. I’m just always concerned because each player on both sides of the line of scrimmage belongs to you when you do that. You try to take the approach of having pads in the morning and not in the afternoon. So far, I think it’s working pretty good. Only time will tell.”

Q: What might be any concerns you have between now and Friday night?

VERMEIL: “The depth in the defensive lines – a lot of dings there and we haven’t seen John Browning for a while and Junior Siavii for a while. We should get Montique Sharpe back today. That’ll help us. Jimmy Wilkerson came up with a bruise today that we didn’t know he had last night. We’re a little low in numbers in defensive linemen right now.

“Offensive tackles we’re low in numbers, too. When you run as many reps as we do and try to coach all three groups, then you have your second guys taking the second and third guy’s reps. They can get worn down.”

Q: What is wrong with Junior Siavii specifically?

VERMEIL: “He has a little tendonitis originally. We pretty much have it cured in the left knee but now it’s in the right knee. It’s just a matter of time. It’s better today. He last year missed a lot of time and so far this year he’s missed some time in the off-season and now again. You start really getting concerned about it.”

Q: You know any more about Will Shields’ timetable?

VERMEIL: “He’s doing well. He was in the weight room at 6:30 AM this morning working. He’s making good progress. He knows the scheme but the young kids (missing) really hurts them.”

I sure hope everyone is ready for the opener. Sounds like were starting to go into the "slim pickins" mode again.

Hmm. ounds like a lot of guys are taking up time in the trainers room. I'd rather have the vets in there right now than the rookies.

I'm worried that Tynes is going to cost us a game or two missing easy fg's/Xpts...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

You can count on it if he's still missing "one a day."

He'll be able to play with it but it healing depends on where in his knees he has that tendonitis. There are certain types that end to become chronic and about impossible to get over like the one that ended Mark McGwirers career...that quadricep/upper patellar tendonitis is a real hassle. I have had it in both knees for 4 out of the last 5 years now and it's a real pain in the butt.

So the knee bone is connected to the butt bone?

Yeah and they have been between the 30 and 45 yarders that he has been missing, and its not even a real game situation!

As silly as it may sound. There is a part of me that is relieved that some of our starters are dinged up. "dinged up" being the key word here.

Maybe when the regular season begins, they will be ready to go.

Every year, I have rising concerns about getting injured in the preseason and training camps. Every year it gets worse. So often any more, key players are out before the 1st regular season game.

Hopefully, we dont have any injuries to key players, and start the season with a full complement of playmakers. We will need it.

They need practice and contitioning as well. But if they cannot simulate game speed, or intensity in the hitting practices, then it seems like the return may not warrant the investment. Of course, I am not a head football coach, so I dont pretend to know what's best.

I just think this might be the best team in awhile for the Chiefs and want to see them at full strength. I don't want to be talking "what if's" by the end of the season.

We should have took a chance on Paul Edinger in the off-season, imo. Just to get some quality competition in here.

*On a side note, I may sound like a dreamer, but... I hope the Chiefs bury teams this year. That way, it doesn't have to come down to crunch, and hope for Tynes to win us a game.
