interview with Gun

from the Chiefscoalition...don't know if I should post the whole thing, but here a couple snips...much better than anything coming out of the Star:

gunther

DB: I was really disappointed when I read in the offseason that Kawika Mitchell didn't have the attitude to be physical. From what I was picking up, he didn't have the attitude of physicality, to dare you to even step on the field. Now how can that be when he's playing middle linebacker, the most physical position on the field.

GUN: "Well, we took six months and mentally beat him and he responded...The other night I tested him. I called him out in a meeting, told him to get out in front and talk. I sat down...And he said all the right things about how to play this game, the attitude you gotta bring to the table on every snap....I went out in the hall, called him over and I said, do you understand why I did that? He said, 'you wanted the guys to know that I'm the MLB.' I said no! I said it was just important to one guy and that was me. I wanted to believe you when you talked and I believe you....

DB: Ryan Sims looks different, he looks better.

GUN: Yeah, but he's got a long ways to go before he satisfies me...

The comments on Mitchell here, and from others watching him at camp, are extremely encouraging. The guy seems to have a fire this year.

The comments on Sims I think are overall positive.

1) He's making progress, which is more than we could ever say about him before.

2) We know how hard Gunther is to "satisfy".

Former DB's interview with Sims is great. Sims all but admits that he wasn't giving 100% because he was fed up with Robinson, was tired of being yelled at for trying to get in the backfield, didn't feel he was being used right, etc.

yeah, I think he would be much harsher on Sims if there was a real lack of progress...he'll be better, the question is how much?

and I'm dying to see Mitchell in a real game...and why can't those lazy ****ers at the Star ask some interesting questions?

I remember that one game where Robinson was actually yelling at Sims for going in the backfield, and I'm assuming that Sims just lost respect for Robinson, to a point where he doesn't care anymore.

SIMS: My first two years here, that wasn't allowed -- getting in the backfield, because of the way we ran our defense, because of Greg. With Gunther, there's a lot less stuff to remember, it's about getting up the field and causing problems behind the line of scrimmage.

That was the straw the broke the camel's back with me when it comes to Eric Hicks.

Even those of us sitting on the couch on Sundays could see that Robinson's scheme was losing games for us.

Sims tries to freelance and make some things happen and Hicks gets in his grill and calls him out for not being a team player.

Well Mr. "I can handle being 1-3" this game is your JOB. Being a team player doesn't mean shit if you're a LOSER.

whoa..I totally glossed over this statement:

"GUN: Yeah but I've got an outside linebacker (Derrick Johnson) that might be better than ALL those guys I had."

"DB: Well why did you work out in Atlanta before, instead of working out with the team?

SIMS: Well, because I wasn't happy. I wasn't happy with the coaches. I didn't like what I was doing. I felt it was opposite of what I was doing in college. My first two years I use to get cussed out after every game for getting up field and getting behind the line and I hated it. I didn't like the situation I was in."

I can understand why Sims would be upset, but it isn't an excuse not to train in KC and go pout back home.

None of us enjoyed watching Robinson's scheme, but the guy has rings. In hindsight, he realized his team had no talent and he thought his BBDB was the best option - it probably was looking at how bad Gunther failed with the same players/different scheme.

Well, several of the players that "failed" under Robinson were drafted BY Robinson. He brought in Sims, who everybody has said is a 1-gap player and tried to make him a 2-gap player. If Mitchell busts out this year, he'll be the "proof".

Robinson may have suffered from a lack of talent at some positions, but at others, he simply had no idea how to use it.

Not to mention that I would be more inclined to believe that the players gave up on Robinson because of his complicated schemes as well, in my opinion.

Yes he did need better players to work with but I agree Coach...the players were frustrated as hell with the system.

I'm not sure I put too much stock into Robinson having the power to tell CP who to draft.

Look at the profile of players we drafted...

Robinson influenced Vermeil and Vermeil influenced the drafts...
