Chiefs Team Report
8/18/2006

By Adam Teicher
Kansas City Star

PERSONNEL ANALYSIS: Halfback Dee Brown will likely earn a roster spot even though the Chiefs traded for Michael Bennett. Brown plays well on special teams and was effective as Larry Johnson's backup when a sore hamstring kept Bennett out of action. Brown is only about 210 pounds but was surprisingly effective in short-yardage situations. Brown won't get much work unless Johnson or Bennett gets injured, but he is well-versed in the offense, so the Chiefs feel they can use Brown in a variety of situations. The Chiefs were waiting for either Damon Huard or Brodie Croyle to claim the No. 2 quarterback spot. Both had injuries that cost them playing time in training camp and the early preseason. Huard will probably win the job because of his experience, but the Chiefs are eager to get a good look at Croyle, a rookie who with a strong performance can still win the job. He has a bigger upside than Huard. Croyle has a stronger, more accurate arm. Casey Printers has played his way out of any consideration for the job.

NEWCOMER REPORT: Kyle Turley is rapidly erasing concerns about his ability to be a premier player after a two-year hiatus because of back troubles. Turley played well through training and the early preseason. He hasn't lost his considerable athletic ability. Just as important, his back has held up. Turley will play the season at about 285 pounds in a concession to his back problems. He will face some ends determined to beat the smaller tackle with a bull rush. It will be interesting to see how Turley handles this. He uses his techniques well, so if anyone can survive at the lighter weight, it should be Turley.

PROBLEM SPOT: Depth at wide receiver has yet to emerge, so look for the Chiefs to shop for veteran help before the start of the season. The Chiefs can survive if starters Eddie Kennison and Samie Parker and slot receiver Dante Hall stay healthy. If there's an injury, the Chiefs are in trouble if they don't find veteran help. The Chiefs have several young receivers, but none appears capable of helping immediately. Rookies Jeff Webb and Chris Hannon have some ability, but each is probably at least a year away.

BREAKOUT/SURPRISE PLAYERS: The Chiefs are hopeful this is the year Kris Wilson becomes a consistent contributor. Wilson will get some work as an H-back or an extra tight end as the Chiefs will use a traditional fullback in fewer situations this season. Wilson is more advanced as a receiver than blocker. He runs good routes, catches the ball well and runs well after the catch. He gives the Chiefs the ability to expand their playbook because they have no one else with his particular set of skills. Wilson will probably never become an every-down player until he becomes a better blocker. Kevin Sampson continues to hold off his competitors and will probably wind up as the starting right tackle. Sampson has enough ability to be a productive player. He is a good athlete capable of leading for open field plays like sweep and screen passes. Sampson must improve as a pass protector and be more consistent than he was in limited playing time last season.

I think our FO should give every player the entire 4 games before deciding who makes the team. Teicher makes it sound like we have already made those decisions.
