I covered the Chiefs' season-ending win vs. Seattle in 1987. Afterwards in the lockerroom, Mr. Hunt came by and shook every players' hand and spoke encouraging words to them -- remember, this was after a 4-11 season in which they had a 9-game losing streak.
Mr. Hunt then stood in the middle of the lockerroom and fielded questions from all the reporters, and did so with so much grace. He was very calm and soft-spoken, very personable. Didn't matter who you were, he gave everyone equal time. It was not what I expected from a professional sports owner. Lamar Hunt, shall we say, transcended the genre. |

I never met Mr. Hunt but I had the utmost respect for the man and what he did for professional football, along with other professional sports as well. All I can do now is honor his memory in my sig line and remember the years of entertainment he provided to all of us.
God Bless You, Lamar Hunt.

Never meet the man, but once before a game I was running around looking for tickets and was standing right next to him by the Arrowhead tent. It was really a surreal moment, gave me butterflies!

I got to shake his hand several times before a game started. He'd come down to the field and hang out, watch the players warm up, then head back up to the press box about 15 minutes before game time. I'd always wish him good luck, and he would always offer up a handshake.
Very sad day today for all Chiefs fans. There'll never be another one like him. |

Don't laugh, but my degree is in Public Relations. I did my internship for Worlds of Fun, which, at the time was owned by Hunt Midwest. We were having a big event, with a hot air balloon launch, and Mr. Hunt and his wife were making an appearance. One of my functions that day was to drive Mr. Hunt and his wife to the restricted area, where we were doing the launch. It ended up with me driving, Mrs. Hunt in the middle, then Mr. Hunt. I introduced my self and Mrs. hunt asked me how long I had worked at Worlds of Fun. I told her I had worked there for 5 seasons (I had worked the first 4 seasons as a ride operator and ride supervisor).
Mrs. Hunt then turned to Mr. Hunt and said, "Lamar....Do you know Dale?" I thought it was funny..out of all the things Mr. Hunt owned, plus W.O.F. had probably 200 permanant employees, and 3000 seasonal employees, and she actually thought that maybe Mr. Hunt knew me. Mr. Hunt replied, "No dear, I haven't had the pleasure until now." We chatted a bit but the ride was short. He was a very gracious man. May he RIP. |

My friend and I drove from PHX to see the game. We were in the stands watching the Chiefs warm up. I look over and see this older man talking to another man. I say to my friend "Hey that's Lamar Hunt" he says "Nah he wouldn't just be just walking around" So I let it go. Anyway a couple minutes later I see him on the field talking to Tony G. So there was my chance to say hello to a truly great man and I had to listen to my friend. |

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Hunt during the Red Friday in '02 for the Chiefs 40th Anniversary.I had purchased one of the 40th Anniversary t-shirts and upon meeting him I asked if he'd be so kind to sign the shirt.
I remember him noting that were no other signatures on the shirt and I respectively replied that they wasn't going to be either that I only wanted the man's autograph who had started and seen it all. We visited for a few minutes, about the team and the like, just a great man who made time for others. Rest In Peace Lamar

Never had the privilege of meeting him, but my wife used to work in the office at Worlds of Fun. She sat near the front of the office and was talking on the phone when someone she did not recognize (I know... don't laugh) walked up and stood near her desk. The person did not show any impatience while waiting for her call to finish. When she was done, she asked if she could help him. He introduced himself as Lamar Hunt and wanted to know if he could borrow her phone book and telephone. The wife said of course, while thinking to herself, "Well, yeah, you own it". She said he was in the office several more times and was always very gracious and the perfect gentleman. |

I was at one of the Red Friday events at Sportz Nutz and had gotten Kimble Anders and Tim Grunhard to sign my hat. I caught Lamar as he was leaving the event, and even though he was apparently in a hurry to leave, he took the time to sign autographs for 4 or 5 people who had lined up.
I didn't even really get the opportunity to talk to him other than getting the autograph and had never met him before, but I gotta tell ya, this is hard...finding out this morning that he had passed. He did so much for so many people and never sought out the recognition that he received and deserved. It's like another poster said earlier, I feel like I lost a member of my family today. It's very sad.
