I'd probably rate them like this, at least until the 22nd-25th:
1) Terrell, hands down. He could go #1 if SD doesn't trade down and he's worth whatever pick is used. 2) Alex Bannister. Won't be drafted in the first round, but if he gets into a situation with a good WR coach, he could be the second coming of Randy Moss. 6'5, 202 pounds, sub 4.4 speed (rumored to run 4.22). Scary measurables, but real questions about his attitude, motivation. 3) Koren Robinson. Like Bannister but 3 inches shorter. Really, really huge potential. 4) Santana Moss. Would be a perfect fit here as #3 WR and KR/PR specialist (not going to happen, just pointing it out...). Small in stature, but a threat every down and plays big in the big games. 5) Reggie Wayne. Gonna be a solid receiver for someone for a few years. Not sure how much upside/improvement is in his future, but he's as polished a guy as there is this year. 6) Quincy Morgan. Needs some work, but could end up the best of the group (of course you could say that about all 10...). 7) Chad Johnson. Combines will dictate how high he goes. 8) Rod Gardner. Solid but unspectacular. Will be a great possession guy for someone. 9) Freddie Mitchell. His future depends on how coachable he is. Huge upside, but I don't expect a great deal. 10) Bobby Newcombe. The sky is the limit in my opinion, but he's going to take some time to get there. |

Kegger,
Those paper numbers on Bannister made my eyes pop earlier this season also...Only got to see him at the All Star games, he looked a little timid versus the big school guys. Did you get to see him at all during the season?

No, I didn't see him during the regular season. I didn't think his showing in the Senior Bowl was that bad either time I watched it, unlike other folks, but I knew going into the game he was a project and wasn't expecting a herculean effort from him quite yet. I think he'd be a great mid 2nd round pick if we acquired one, especially now that Joiner is here, but I doubt we'll be taking any WRs. I'm really gonna keep an eye on him in the combines though, and if he matures in the NFL, watch out. ;)

My list of the 5 WR's who'll perform best out of this draft:
1) Koren Robinson 2) David Terrill 3) Chris Chambers 4) Chad Johnson 5) Brian Poli- Dixon (reminds me alot of Chris Carter) **Ron Johnson would have been #2 if he had come out. As far as Bannister... I wasn't impressed with him in the Senior Bowl... I'm always wary of small college guys.... people keep looking for small college guys and reference the success of Moss, forgetting that he was a top recruit at Florida St. Bannister has good measurables... but that was also said about Ricks.... I'll hold back my judgement on him till I see him compete against someone other than the Appalachian St's of the world. That said... He totally sounds like an Al Davis prospect meaning we'll take him in the first. |

Speaking of Ricks, I wonder if we'll get to see him at all in 2001 or if he'll be a casuality? He doesn't seem to fit the Vermeil Ram prototype for WR, but again, if we're fitting the system to the players, and not vice-versa, Alexander, Morris and Ricks could really provide some mismatches for DBs. Now if we only had a legit speed threat for split-out and KR/PR...

The last time I got all worked up over a big WR with a tude problem, it blew up in my face...I was sporting serious wood a few years ago over Lovell Pickney out of Texas...6'5" 4.4 speed, built like a brick $hithouse with good hands...Because of his tude he fell to something like the 5th round and was out of the league in a heartbeat...

David Terrell is the best WR is the draft no question, IMO. Well maybe not, Terrell's game is overrated due to Michigan's O-line. (not)
Terrell is a top 3 pick.

jl80 & I debated this on Sunday, and from watching the college stars challenge before the super bowl, Santana Moss looked like the cream of the crop(including Terrell). He was faster, more agile & showed exceptionally quick feet & hands.
I don't think his size will be much of a factor, stating your comparisons between Marvin Harrison(5-11) and Keyshawn(6-3).

MI,
I completely agree with you in theory, but at some point/height that theory won't always hold true...It is beleived that Moss is only 5'8" or less.

We'll find out for sure at the combine. Either way, I think he'll be a fantastic kick/punt returner.

MI,
It may turn out to be a bad comparison but a guy I fell in love with at the WR position a few years ago was Mario Bailey from Washington...He dominated the college level...I though he would have no problem overcoming the size issue, but he turned out to be nothing more than a NFL Europe superstar.

That name sounds familiar. Where was he from?
BTW, I like debating football much better, don't you?

No way is Moss over 5'9".... He's got big time giddyup though... He's one of those guys that hits full speed within 3 steps or so...
He'll do well as long as he ends up some place where he doesn't have to carry the weight of being a #1 receiver.... I love watching him play.... |

Moss is only 5'8 IMO, but he would be a perfect fit for us, lined up in the slot in 3/4 wide formations and giving us a threat at KR/PR for the first time in a few years. Shame we have so many other needs that we can't even think about taking him, he's a gamer.
