Is gangsta rap leading to increased crime in the US?

This is the title of a project I've been assigned for my Criminology class.

Part of the project allows me to gather opinion from people I know.

What better place to do this than on the Planet?

What say you? Does rap contribute to the rising number of violent crime in the US? Any bearing at all?

Does rap breed deviance?

All opinions welcome. TIA.

The same people that let gangsta rap push them towards violence are the same ones that let violent movies do it, and those are complete idiots. Gangsta rappers tell stories. 99% of the stuff you hear in a rap song is fiction. Plain and simple, it is entertainment, and I love the shit.

Not really, but I do think in someway it sends the wrong message to younger people saying that it's cool and okay to live that lifestyle because it got them fame and where they are.

Dont get me wrong, music has been sung about sex and drugs for a long time and it all comes down to proper parenting and having a solid upbringing.

I would say no. I don't think there is any direct corrialtion between the two. In the early 90's there might have been an argument, but rap has jumped to a whole new level, while crime may have increased it has not increased at the same rate as rap has shot up in popularity.

Legitimate gangsta rap hasn't existed for about 10-15 years.

Our socioeconomic structure(on the high end and the low end) has much more to do with human behavior. Rap doesn't encourage a particular behavior, it's just an outlet for it.

I think, as with most things in a teenagers life, that it comes down to the friends you have and the people you associate with. While I don't believe the music helps the situation, and may increase it a bit, I don't think it is a significant amount.

I mean really, how many of us children of the late 80's and 90's became Satan worshipers because of Ozzy, Motley Crue and the like?

It doesn't help to deter crime. So it's part of the problem notpart of the solution.

If the rappers did good things like help their neighborhoods with $$$ they made off sales

instead of worrying about rollin in Escalades on 20s with ho's. the example is bad.

maybe in the midwest or the white suburbs but not in poor inner city neighborhoods.
