Didn't some hardcore Islamics call for a death sentence and bounty on Salman Rushide for writing that?

What ever came of it? Did the UK and Iran come to an agreement?

In terms of literary complexity, The DaVinci Code is a Dr. Seuss book by comparison.

It's very rich, highly referential....it has a lot of allegory and post-modern language play. You won't get all of it, it's pretty much impossible to get all of it unless you can tap directly into the author's brain, but the overall narrative is excellent thus far.

When you say referential, is it filled with footnotes and the like? I find it distracting trying to read those type of works. It is like reading doctoral thesis for fun.

No, not footnotes. Referential as in several allusions to politics, pop culture, literature, music, etc.

I used to have a copy, but never got around to reading it. From what I've heard, it is an astounding piece of literature. I believe he also wrote a follow up to it, if I'm not mistaken.

For those interested in trying out Rushdie, I recommend Midnight's Children. Probably more accessible and, arguably, better than Satanic Verses.
