Who Stays, Who Goes

Sometimes when I need to fall asleep, I count how many players the Chiefs should keep, and how many are less than good, and are expendable/replaceable; because of age, ability or both.

Last night I was dismayed in my count. I'm thinking more than half of this team should be replaced.

Here's the guys I think we should keep for 2008. All others are expendable:

Offense:
Bowe
McIntosh
Waters
Gonzalez
Croyle
Thigpen
LJ
Smith

Defense:
J Allen
T Hali
Boone
Wilkerson
Tank Tyler
McBride
DJ
Edwards
Pollard
Paige
Sapp
Wesley
Brackenridge
Fox

Special Teams:
Colquitt
Sippio
Webb

That's 25 guys.

I think we cut of out age:
Kennison
Law
Surtain
Huard
Weigman
Dunn
Turley

Cut the rest because of suckage.
Harris has been the new Kendrell Bell this year.
Both corners must go.
3 of the 5 offensive line must go.

We need another starting receiver, and a kicker.

Too many holes.
Chiefs will be 1980's bad for another two years at least.

What do you think?

I agree. Every one of those players can be replaced by a Free Agent or a draft pick. No doubt about it! In fact, why wait? We need to pick up all of these starting quality free agents now while the getting is good before the rest of the NFL realizes there is basically a complete team on the sidelines waiting to be signed! Seriously, we're going to lose our chance here if we don't hurry!

Good list. I think Surtain will probably get 1 more year, just because it's hard to dump so many contracts and fill so many holes in 1 offseason. Huard will likely return as the backup QB. I think Wesley will go - his contract is too big. Fox should be gone - he's done nothing to deserve a new contract.

I actually think the roster will be in good shape after this offseason, as a lot of the dead weight contracts will be cleared out and we'll have room to add players.

I'm thinking it will take 2 to 3 years to turn over 1/2 of the roster.
As far as Herm and Carl, I'm afraid we're stuck with them till Carl's contract runs out. Clark Hunt is too busy rolling around in his cash storage room to stop the money-go-round.

With scenarios like this, you can't just look at who sucks compared to others on the team, you must also consider who sucks vs who you could get to replace them via the draft or FA.

We don't have 25 picks in the draft (yet), and the coin can only be spread so thin.

Good list, though.

We've already turned over half the roster in the last 2 offseasons.

2005:

http://www.jt-sw.com/football/pro/ro...Annual/2005-kc

2007:

http://www.nfl.com/teams/kansascityc...roster?team=KC

I count 21 names on both lists. That means the team turned over 60% over this period.

By next year I expect there to be only about 10 players who played for Vermeil still on the roster. I don't think people have come to grips yet with just how lousy a roster he and Carl and Lynn Stiles left here.

Critical to find at least one guard, one tackle, one corner and a kicker for 2008. Next year we can work on filling other holes, but I'd trade for draft picks like a mother in the off season.

Sorry to kinda pee on your parade, but all that doesn't matter. If we are going to re-build and Clark is serious about winning, do the most appropriate thing, fire Carl Peterson. Do a bit of a FO shake up. Bring in men who are competent of what it takes to build a good NFL roster.
Keep Herm , but not as a coach, place him in charge of scouting or make him vice president of player personnel. If there is something Herm can do right it's evaluating players.

*If we are going to build a strong team, do it properly. Start from management.
